I think I'd have to say Billy Budd. Which is ironic, as it's the one I nearly ditched altogether just for the sake of a night in. Other highlights were Aida (I wouldn't go and see something on multiple occasions just because I know members of the cast - they definitely have to earn my repeat visits ), the first of the two concerts featuring Carmina Burana (fab soloists, fab chorus and orchestra - just a very high standard all round in a very well-constructed programme), Mahler 6, Maria Stuarda and The Sacrifice.

I've submitted it, Mary, but it hasn't appeared on the site yet. The editor has been having technical trouble. I hope it might go up today

Good morning each. Well actually it's this afternoon but I'm not picky. Freezing up here. Tried out all my new winter stuff I'd bought for Lapland when I took the dog out this morning and it all works fine. Still busy wrapping presents so I've not got too much to do when I get home on Wednesday.

Now that Milly's set a precedent for posting this afternoon I will follow I am soooo tired. I potentially have two social events to attend this evening (the office Christmas party and the R3OK meet). Then tomorrow I have a lunch appointment and a lengthy Wagner opera (Parsifal). I half volunteered to boost somebody's choir on Sunday p.m. in a concert of Messiah excerpts and Christmas carols, but am certain that if I do not take the afternoon and evening to relax, I will be ill next week, so instead I will be doing housework and writing my Christmas cards. P.S. Mary, link to my Turn of the Screw review is here: http://www.operatoday.com/content/2007/12/the_turn_of_the_1.php(pardon the typos - I'll point them out and get them fixed.)

Morning - well, it's not actually, but I overslept badly this morning so I've only been up since 11. Ready for lunch now though. Are you taking the dog to Lapland, Milly?

Good whatever-it-is.
I know you like Christmas, Milly, but don't you find writing cards the most boring job in the world? I'm not keen on wrapping things, either, probably because I'm not very good at it.
I got a new padlock for the gate at the side of my house, and it took me twenty minutes to work out how to remove the key!!! I'm beginning to think I'm not very practical....It said "Prior to fitting, familiarise yourself with its simple action", but didn't say what the simple action was, because obviously any chimpanzee could do it.
Desperately cold here, too, but quite cosy in the house.
Oh, just seen Ruth's link. Will have a look as soon as poss. Thanks!

Are you taking the dog to Lapland, Milly? I don't think that would be a good idea! He'd be fighting all the huskies.

Mary, writing cards is a bit of a pain because all the individual personal messages take up so much time. Some of my friends send a "round robin" letter but I've never done that. I've had a bumper amount of cards already this year - hope I've remembered everybody.

Every year I seem to leave it later and later before buying and sending cards. Every year the same thing happens - on Christmas Eve a card drops through the letter box from someone that I hadn`t thought to send a card to So far I haven`t even bought any cards yet, never mind sent `em! Sigh.

Every year the same thing happens - on Christmas Eve a card drops through the letter box from someone that I hadn`t thought to send a card to . I think that happens to everyone, Mort. The worst time for me was when I was doing carol concerts, and cards were handed out personally. How we dreaded being given one by someone we hadn't thought of. It was so obvious. It was rather like saying either "You are my friend" or "You aren't my friend". Milly - yes, it's the messages that take the time. I hardly write any cards without them. I think Round Robins are a cop-out, and in any case I want to say different things to different people. Ron, I'm only partially up and about, but improving. Many thanks for those links - I've got the Osian Ellis folk songs etc on LP, I think, but I haven't got the 1953 Aldeburgh concert. I can't believe you've managed to find something I haven't got! Very clever!!

Not quite as boring as standing in the queue in the post office with the overseas ones ... which is how I spent my lunch-hour today

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Good morning. No frost here this morning but this is the first time for a few days. Still feels very cold outside. This is my last day online before we set off in the early hours tonight to the airport. Back Wednesday. Then I'll be able to talk about cold just like Reiner!
