Amaryllises (that can't be right: shouldn't it be 'amarylles' or something?!) are such silly things, anyway: you wait all year, sometimes two, for a flower and then spend the rest of the time staring at a couple of green leaves trying to convince yourself something exciting is about to happen. The flowers are lovely though. Maybe the solution is to get twelve and hope they might somehow flower in rotation.

I'v had one for about six weeks and it's about to flower. It's no good trying to keep them, though - a new one every so often is needed.

Anyway, the badly-wrapped one has been delivered to its recipient, so (I can't resist, sorry) -

Adieu, sweet Amaryllis,
For since to part your will is,
O heavy tiding,
Here is for me no biding,
Yet once again ere that I part with you,
Amaryllis, sweet adieu, adieu.

Good morning everybody Smiley

It is warmer today than it was yesterday.

I am thinking of going, this lunchtime, to Southwark Cathedral's annual carol service for local office-workers.  However I don't actually know whether I fancy it.  I don't feel in the Christmas mood yet.  I haven't even written my Christmas cards yet (I was going to do them yesterday, but got diverted to (a) cooking a large fish pie and (b) dozing on the sofa) so that needs doing this evening.  I have also promised my cousin that I will go round to hers for a cup of tea - I encouraged her to move to my neighbourhood when she was looking for a place in London, and ever since she did, I've neglected her!

I am trying to work out the best way of making my flat festive.  I have NEVER done without a Christmas tree, and I want my flat to have the Christmas-tree smell, however I don't have much space, and as I am away for four days over Christmas I won't be around to keep a tree watered.  I am thinking along the lines of buying some sort of pine wreath to hang on the wall (though I don't have any picture-hooks either!) and hanging my string of coloured tree-lights around the window so the flat looks pretty from the outside.

I have not had to do any Christmas food shopping as I am having Christmas dinner at my mum's.  However I have promised to procure a bottle of dessert wine to go with pud, and some cheese goodies from Borough Market.

Meanwhile, I have loads of work to do.  Whose idea was it to change the way my job works so that all my major deadlines are in December and January?

Well here we all are on the Solstice (for those who celebrate  Wink).  Good morning all.  No frost here, just damp and grey.  Angry  Hopefully I've done everything now for the run-up to Christmas.  Just two more presents to wrap and deliver and that's it then.  Relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaax and enjooooooooy.  Smiley

Mornin' All!

Definitely a porridge morning up here - we're about minus two f still. With all the dashing around yesterday, never got round to making any last night, so today it's the ignominy of new-made, which is never as satisfying as overnight porridge...

Mills,

You're a marvel. All my presents are done too, though I've still four left to wrap: I'm not normally ready this early, and I'm starting to panic because there's nothing to panic about....

Morning` ya all

Chilly here but the raw cold of the last week has gone.  I have one present outstanding and the only way to sort that is by going to Brent Cross Shopping Centre. To do that today would be an act of certifiable madness. I`m going to take a gamble and go on Monday <fingers crossed emoticon>  Right, now it`s time for a spot of duck hunting in Muswell Hill!

Have a happy day everyone Kiss

Howdy, gang. Rather mild down here on the south coast... Wrapping today, and a few dry runs at packing everything into the car before the family trek begins tomorrow.  Shocked

Mort, you mean you've left your Muswell Hill duck til NOW!!  Grin

Good morning everyone.  I expect everyone will be racing around today like me doing last-minute deliveries of presents to friends and sorting out Christmas food.  Actually I've only one present left to deliver so that shouldn't take long.  I'm debating whether to buy one of those really huge American 'fridges as my Christmas present to me.  Sale starts Boxing Day..... Smiley

A merry Christmas to all and hope that you are all as happy and content as we are!  Kiss Kiss Kiss

Good morning Milly, t-p and everybody else.

Milly, I wish I had room for one of those fridge-freezers, or at least a separate fridge and freezer.  My fridge is a perfectly adequate size, but I would like a full-height freezer as it would make it much easier to buy and cook in bulk.  I buy and cook in bulk anyway, but there's only so much one can do with the freezer drawers.  Given my social schedule, which is either impossibly busy or completely dead, it would be nice if I could have cookathons when not busy so as not to have to cook at all when busy.

Morning everyone. Seems to be a bit less cold today than it's been for the last couple of weeks, thank goodness.

I expect everyone will be racing around today like me doing last-minute deliveries of presents to friends and sorting out Christmas food.

I expect everyone will be racing around today like me doing last-minute deliveries of presents to friends and sorting out Christmas food.

Delivering presents? Now that is something we never do here now. When our kids were little my wife and all her friends got fed up with Christams and the waste of buying silly toys, and they all made a pact NOT to buy each other's kids presents. At the same time our brothers and sisters all agreed that buying presents for all nephews and nieces would cease. And it all made Christmas so much more enjoyable (for the parents), we just visit each other and the kids (all grown up now) are just happy with what their mum and dad (sometimes just mum) bought them.

My wife is a teacher and there's 20 teachers at the school. Again stop the silliness of everyone buying for everyone. They do a secret sort of raffle where each teacher picks a name from a pot and they buy a present ONLY for that teacher. And they have to keep it secret who they are to buy for. Limit £10 and these presents all appear at school on Xmas Eve. It's fun for them guessing who bought them the present and some clearly are more generous than £10. I forgot to ask my wife what she bought this year.

At work (when I was employed) we had over 100 staff. When I was Quality Manager I suggested NO Christmas cards at work but instead there was a box for charity, and was pleasantly surprised that we collected over 200 pounds each Christmas. We used to take the money down to the Birmingham Children's Hospital (when it was in Ladywood) and put a photo in the company magazine.

Christmas CAN be fun without all the cards and stuff  Smiley

I'd posted on the wrong thread so I'd moved it over.

Morning all Smiley  Gosh it`s very civilised out there today. The roads are quiet, buses empty (hooray!) and not that many people about. Marks and Sparks was like the Marie Celeste. Well, maybe not exactly like that but it certainly wasn`t a rugby scrum. I nearly enjoyed myself Grin
