What pleasant pictures Madame Millicent, and such an unusual location! We suppose though that there must be houses of a kind somewhere across Lapland, yet we see no sign of any . . .

Compliments of the season Sydney! There were a few scattered dwellings although I didn't take photos of them. They were all made of wood! Log cabin structures. Not very spacious but presumably very warm. They would have to be! Where we were staying there were very few people. Pallas is part of a National Park area. The only local home we did visit belonged to the lady who owned the huskies. We were invited to go and see some puppies. This was a large chalet-style house - but still made of wood. Her nearest neighbour is 35 kms away and the nearest hospital is 200 kms. She had a fire burning outside in what looked like a tin canoe. It was very pleasant and she gave us hot berry juice to drink. A more isolated existence you couldn't imagine and in such an inhospitable climate too. The locals are a very hardy lot who don't seem to ail much at all. This is probably just as well given the proximity of medical facilities. They do have an air ambulance these days but trying to survive even 50 years ago in such conditions would have been more than a challenge. Her children go to school via a taxi which arrives at 7 a.m. They're delivered back at 4 p.m. The school is in the nearest village which is 35 kms away. I loved the peace and tranquillity of it all. The puppies were gorgeous - just 7 weeks old.

Huskies live outside all the time. They have to apparently because if they were brought in they wouldn't want to go out to work at all. They even give birth outside, but these puppies had a little kennel in their enclosure.

Ah, they`re cute little chaps Milly! I don`t suppose that cuddling is encouraged if they have to grow up as tough, strong dogs?

My mouth was definitely NOT upturned. I must admit the hat has provided an excellent optical illusion. It looks like Mr. Happy. This clarifies my confusion. Thanks

Ah, they`re cute little chaps Milly! I don`t suppose that cuddling is encouraged if they have to grow up as tough, strong dogs? On the contrary, they are cuddled, held and when they're adult dogs they're extremely friendly! I was amazed. They're only hardship is the weather but they are totally used to it. Their fur is very thick and has a natural layer of grease in between each layer. If the temperature rises to freezing level and and they're out working, they're too hot and as they run they grab mouthfuls of snow as they go along to drink and cool down. They don't slow down while they're doing it either. They're superb dogs.

And lovely things they are too, David. Can't place them though. One of the American Whistling Ducks? Something like that?

Very good George, one of these I think. Snapped at the Barnes Wetland Centre on New Year's Day.
