An American friend sent me this:
Quote
The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is
suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best
friends -- if they're okay, then it's you.

Didn't Michael Flanders use a line similar to this in At The Drop Of A Hat almost 50 years ago?

Why do we call Monteverde Monteverdi?

My good old Scholes says

MONTEVERDI (or Monteverde) CLAUDIO (GIOVANNI ANTONIO) (P. 516, PL. 93. 4) Born at Cremona in 1567 and....

Well, he did try to bring it to our attention.

Got me thinking, though, when did we stop saying 'Born at....' and start saying 'Born in....'

Born in Cremona in 1567.... S. Grew would not like the two 'in' words in the same clause, maybe Scholes did not.

Wiki says 'Monteverdi was born in 1567 in Cremona......

This is, all the old publications I've seen have Monteverde. I'm puzzled as to when it all got started. Have been for a while, actually... To me it doesn't even seem to make sense in Italian! Undecided

Why do dogs always chase their tails clockwise?

Why is it possible to tie a tie properly at the first attempt only when you are not in any hurry?

Why don't you get stones in your shoes as often as you used to?

Why, on receiving an unexpected letter, do we spend ten minutes scouring the outside for clues as to who it might be from when the answer is readily available inside?

Here are some German whys for tha Dish (and anyone else who feels sich angesprochen).

Why is it Schlagzeuger and not Zeugschläger? Does it really mean someone who begets beats (rather than someone who hits stuff)?

What happened to the middle of selbständig? (Especially considering that they've now put back the midddle of Nussschale, Rollladen and Stillleben, for example.)

Why stattdessen and währenddessen and deswegen but trotzdem?

Answers on the back of a postcard to etc, etc

No, that would be Schlagerzeuger, which means someone who begets electric shocks. Schlagzeug means percussion, so a Schlagzeuger is a percussionist. You don't say percusser, either. Zeugschläger is good, though.

Some people do write selbstständig, but since selb- is indeed a sufficient portion of selber and selbst, nothing is actually missing.

Because different prepositions require different cases: statt, während, and wegen take the genitive, while trotz takes the dative. Wait, that isn't even true. Hm. But it must be at least a part of the explanation.

Quite, though. I thought they were all genitive prepositions. If anything it's wegen rather than trotz that's wavering in recent years isn't it? (I had it presented to me as dative in a textbook once and didn't mind then although when I came back to the textbook recently I was rather entsetzt.)

Why are rhetorical questions always the ones to which people feel obliged to provide answers?
