The idea of self-scoring is turning out rather well on the whole is not it?

Indeed. We are most grateful to Mr Grew for providing the calculations so far, which must have been something of a labour of love, but a quite Herculean task nonetheless, especially on weekends which offer plenty of activity.

Congratulations also to Mr Sudden on victory at reaching the 15000 target. We anticipate much industrious activity on his part as he seeks to 'lap' other competitors in his ascent up the table!

we suspect that Mr Barrett was in fact thinking of a character from Down by the Greenwood Side: Mrs Green.
Quite so Mr Opilec.

We gratefully accept Member Inquisitor's congratulations. Alas the duties of employment will be keeping us from industrious snatch-hunting in the next few days so alas there will be no lapping in this quarter for a little while yet!

We note in any case that lapping would appear to be Member Inquisitor's speciality - he was no great distance away in at the clinch, so to speak...

There's definitely a family resemblance.

Indeed. Although we suspect that Mr Barrett was in fact thinking of a character from Down by the Greenwood Side: Mrs Green.

I knew I should have listened to the insistent little voice that said it was foolish to ignore Richard's 'by marriage' comment. Thank goodness points aren't at stake.

Quite so, Mr Garnett. Something of a daily mantra for us.

Further to the matter of Martinu as conducted by James Conlon, Bryn, you (and indeed anyone else) could do a lot worse than this

which contains three of his most impressive orchestral pieces (the aforementioned Toccata e due canzoni, Double Concerto and Les Fresques) plus three other quite interesting things.

As that is now no longer in the catalogue, I went for the recording made by the orchestra it was written for, though in a much later manifestation directed by Christopher Hogwood. It arrived this morning. Not quite as snappy as the old Supraphon performance, if my memory serves me right, but still pretty fair. As a follow up, I looked for other items in the series by the kammerochesterbasel, and found this:

The Tippett "Toccata e due Canzoni" listed on the front cover is perhaps better known as his "Divertimento on Sellinger's Round". Wink

Ah, Mr Bryn, glad to see you here, I'm surprised you haven't yet unravelled the secrets of at least one of 232, 234 and 247. And Strina will perhaps be familiar with one of them, what with its baroquely violinistic aspect.

Been too busy recording old LPs to hard disk for editing, etc., richard. I might have a listen in a while, if I can find the links.

Hmm. I feel I should know 247, but I don't.

Anyway, how about 235, somewhere around here. Remember, there is an antipodean connection. The member of the trio of composers who is usually given first credit, was in at the very early stages of one Scratch Orchestra in 1969, and then set about establishing another, which on one occasion performed simultaneously with the original one, though very widely separated, geographically.

Never mind, Anty...turn your attention instead to Richard's No.247 - we know it's the first movement of a violin concerto in which the soloist doesn't play; it was written in the 1920s, from what I can calculate. I'm stumped!

It's a harsh life here in the burning cauldron of toil that is the 2-60'' competition.

Of course it is, Anty. Just make sure Mr Grew isn't around at the time.
