His new number 53 on the other hand with its deliberate anti-melody and crude vulgar rhythms is almost certainly Shostacowitch all over again. What a pity there is no gambling on this message-board!
In astonishment, let me remind Members (recalling my first clue) that the composer of Puzzle 53 was born in 1931. Shostakovich was born in 1906 (a quarter of a century - one whole generation - earlier). We therefore urge Member Grew to do a little better, and to pull up his socks! Baz

I am having an awful problem with Baz's Puzzle No. 53 in downloading and playing it but can I hazard a guess that the composer is Sofia Gubaidulina?

Well!!! My ghast is well and truly A-FLABBER! So there's more to you than chucking up oranges at Euston after all?! I think you must have earned at least 75 points with that piece of enlightenment Anna. Now...would you post on the other thread, stating exactly what the piece is? Baz xxxxxxxx

Stuart, but surely I should get some points for a) knowing the composer without having been able to hear it and b) giving you so massive a clue as to the answer?

OK, just between us, I'll give you half the points. It may not show up on the Great Computerized Member Rating Table or whatever it's called, but we'll always know!

Stuart, but surely I should get some points for a) knowing the composer without having been able to hear it and b) giving you so massive a clue as to the answer? But Anty, it was so simple to hear. All you had to do was download it, discover it had an erroneous suffix, change that from WAV to MP3, then find that your payer did not like sampling at 22.05k sampling, so then find a player that could handle it and listen. Still, at least you didn't think it was by Malcolm 'Britten wrote ephemeral music' Williamson.

Oh yes, easy for you to say Bryn but how would I know if it had a dodgy suffix? Plus the fact that I am at work and shouldn't be faffing about trying to solve puzzles that I can't hear ....... Stuart has done the gentlemanly thing and I know I have earned another 50 points to lighten my dismal score!

Mr Grew will apply the rules strictly, and poor old Anna will get ZERO. Stuart will get all.
With regard to my files having .wav rather than .mp3 suffixes, I had noticed this! I cannot change them on my computer - the Properties window only shows the prefix filename, and always tells me that they are .wav files (even though I know they are not). But I've discovered I have another program to do the conversion, and this one does provide the correct suffix.
So from my next puzzle onwards, the suffixes should be OK.

Dear Baz, I have never "chucked up" at Euston or any main line station. I provided some brillant street theatre involving dextrous manipulation of oranges whilst dressed as a Nun P.S. Have you tried tossing your three oranges to the strains of Prokofiev yet Anna? xxxxxxxxxxx
Dear Baz, if you had ever come to the right place at the right time you would have seen my brilliant routine to The Love of Three oranges combined with The Miraculous Mandarin which was rounded off with a Piazzolla Tango! Sometimes I liked to use the theme from Harry Lime, which added a certain piquancy!
