Hmm. I wonder whether Anty's guess at John's latest snatch (Patrick Doyle, Harry Potter music) will, if correct, nonetheless fall foul of Mr Grew's 'definition' number 1 for generic as well as chronological reasons:

1) the "classical repertoire" here means music written between 1500 and 2000, and normally performed in concert halls or churches; "jazz" and "pops" are specifically excluded. (We would like to exclude "American music" in general but have decided that that might be thought intolerant by some. We rely then for a balanced mix upon the sense of Members setting.)

Of course, CFM play film scores all the time. And 'classical' composers wrote plenty of them. So, an interesting test case...  Wink

Marty, Marty, Marty, don't you dare encourage our Esteemed Quiz Moderator Mr. Grew to deny me the points wot a poor ragged orphan do need so terrible as to get out of the Abyss  Cry

And Mr. McCrae, 'e did say he would share his points cos of as how I got Baz's wivout even 'hearing it.  Psychic Powers - that's wot I got to 'ave got it in a twinkling.

An' finking about it, a certain singular cove should lose their points for scoring with Mr. Butler's merry tunes shouldn't they?

We believe, Madame Antheil, that the correct guesses at Mr Butler's scribblings were supplied by Mr McCrae and Mr Now, respectively. Seek you to deny them their points? Fye!

Oh lord I forgot about the rules  Roll Eyes

We could have a bet on my points deduction, I reckon 2000 points  Undecided

Doyle's score for 'Goblet' was very different from the popular John Williams scores of previous Potters, though not with the 'magical' effects I thought it was in the main very mature and dark work, much in line with the maturing plot/subject of the books.

Corse not Mr. Martle, don't you be acting the giddy goat and the devils advocaat.  But, see, a precedent do have been set, Messrs. McCrae and Now gained their points in a most respectable manner, so it behoves upon Mr. Grew to let me get me mitts on 100 points aussi, don't it?

John Wright's Puzzle 50 - Harry Potter and The Goblets of Fire "The Black Lake" composed by Patrick Doyle.

Correct! Anna.

Well that's two of us who have seen the film. I don't have the DVD but I recall being impressed with that music. I wonder if it's similar/influenced-very-much by something much earlier......

Sorry John, I haven't seen a HP film in my life.  Grin

See, I told you I was psychic!  Nah, it were me feminine intuition.  Works in mysterious ways it does  Wink

So this is my congratulatory thread Mr. Grew, (not off topic) 150 points in one day means I should only be -140 now  Cheesy  No fear of me being Alana Davies!

But you just lost another 20 for this - 'cos it was 'off topic'. Grrr......!

Point is, John, I don't think Mr Grew's 'rule' about the definition of 'classical' is clear cut when it comes to film scores. Although he may nail you anyway for the date.

No Baz, Dear Mr. Grew said, if we were correct we could have a self-congratulatory posting, which is what I did.  And I did point out it was congratulatory.

No doubt about it! John's post-2000 snippet infringes the rules, and therefore his posting was 'off topic' (along with all those who answered it - Anna!).

That's at least -20 for each I think.

Sad I'm not aware of Black Lake having been performed anywhere but the studio for the film..... I fear the worst from the Grew

What might save me is if Mr Grew LISTENS to the clip and is suitably impressed  Grin

He won't like it! It's mostly 'old hat' and has (in all probability) just too many 'American' associations. I fear you are doomed.

I do not believe there is any way of proving that this music was not written before 2000, save consulting the composer himself. In fact, it has a certain pre-2000 feel to it, don't you think?  Wink

And neither is it 'pops' - while I don't agree that film music is rightly described as 'classical', I certainly did not assume that the snatch(es) in question were anything but concert works. I am sure they could be performed as such, and should perhaps therefore be allowed?

I don't like this game anymore  Cry

Sniffle.  Snuffle.

But John Wright, as an Administrator,  wot has lead an innocent poster astray with 'is Harry Potter, and the bright lure of points, can plead for clemency for me can't he?  Oh I could throw myself at Mr. Grew's feet and beg for mercy on the grounds of being Welsh?
