We admit among the several if not exactly many works of Mr Rochberg which have thus far presented themselves to us none have been to our taste but the snippet is promising and perhaps we shall find a way in some day.  Roll Eyes

It's OK Richard - just that I am on Nul Points at the mo and can't be expected to stand by the puter until someone posts something I know off by heart!

Lyrics are interesting though - if you live in the Waste Midlands and are into solfage  Cheesy

Bryn knows to what I refer!

Of course, I have had to put it on and be driven daft by it at this unearthly hour in the morning (drowns out the sound of the gales though)

p.s.  It was Bryn that introduced me to Glass, whether that is a good or bad thing I am not sure

I think you know what tends to happen under these circumstances Wink

I propose Dance no. 1.
I feel that under these circumstances chivalry demands that we wait until Madame Antheil has had an opportunity to weigh in since the snatch in question was almost snatched from under her nose.

Would you care to remind us by whom, Member Barrett? Wink

Would Member Antheil please report to the actual Competition thread forthwith where an outbreak of unprecedented chivalry has occurred.  Cheesy

At first I was a bit thrown by puzzle 196 (Smetana), because two-thirds of the way through that snippet (the chords at 00:28 to 00:35) it sounds as though it's going to into Verklärte Nacht -- a confusion not helped by a curious pitch-change in the source recording! Cheesy

I noticed a wobble in the recording in the last few seconds of the snatch, but had never got it from the CD.  Maybe it was my snatch-making software?  (WavePad).  Anyway, it's the Tallich, if you're interested.

Actually, my original files are wav, and I have to convert them to mp3 for this competition.  I do them as mp3 with a variable bit rate between 32 and 96.  Would anyone recommend anything else.  I don't really know what I am doing.

Thanks for alerting me to WavePad Tommo Kiss, I've just had a look at it and installed it and, much to my delight, I find that it supports .oma files (ie Sony's ATRAC as used on minidiscs). This is very good news as I can't read them with Audacity or MediaMonkey. I'm now going to have a go at doing some editing, so fingers crossed.

Edit: hmm, thought it was too good to be true, I can open the first small section of a file but you don't get the whole thing - that's bloody Sony for you.

I usually save mp3s at fixed rate 128 kbps btw.

Re puzzle 163 (Weber): oh bugler! I knew I knew it! And I went through all the overtures last night listeniing for that snippet, but never thought of the symphonies. And I have the First on CD! Embarrassed

Which recording was it, IGI? It sounded rather fun.

The recording is by the London Classical Players/ Norrington, coupled with the 2nd Symphony and the Konzertstück, featuring Melvyn Tan.

I don't know the work, but I suspect 200 is Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle.

Tommo

My post above was a bit vague.  By 'the work' I did mean Bluebeard's Castle, but I do readily accept that this means I also do not know the work of which 200 is a snatch.

I suspect there are many more than two works I do not know, from my experience on this thread so far.....

the Konzertstück, featuring Melvyn Tan.

I remember that as being a completely wet lettuce of a piece. Was that just our performance of it?

It wasn't that vague - that's certainly how I understood it.

But keep on trying!  Smiley

We permit ourselves to wonder what the record thus far might be for points in a day for we do indeed seem to be having what the cricketing press might call a run feast.

Indeed, Haydenesque.  But unless Mr Sydney Harbajan Singh Grew views this as a celebration, I am afraid you will have lost points for off-topic.  HOWZAT!

Not out, Mr 1780, surely. That was indeed a celebration, namely for our successful bagging of Shostakovich's 2nd wicket.

We do hope the services of the third umpire will not be required.
