Sorry IGI and Ollie - things have happened so quickly, and I just missed it. Cry

No wuckas, Baz.  Smiley

Herewith the superb Ravel song Trois beaux oiseaux du paradis complete.

Trois beaux oiseaux du paradis
(Mon ami z-il est à la guerre)
Trois beaux oiseaux du paradis
Ont passé par ici.
Le premier était plus bleu que ciel
(Mon ami z-il est à la guerre)
Le second était couleur de neige,
Le troisième rouge vermeil.

« Beaux oiselets du paradis
(Mon ami z-il est à la guerre)
Beaux oiselets du paradis
Qu'apportez par ici ? »
« J'apporte un regard couleur d'azur
(Ton ami z-il est à la guerre) »
« Et moi, sur beau front couleur de neige,
Un baiser dois mettre, encor plus pur ».

« Oiseau vermeil du paradis,
(Mon ami z-il est à la guerre)
Oiseau vermail du paradis,
Que portez-vous ainsi ? »
« Un joli cœur tout cramoisi
(Ton ami z-il est à la guerre) »...
« Ah ! je sens mon cœur qui froidit...
Emportez-le aussi ».

A new one on me Ollie! I now understand that the phrase "No wuckers" is Ozzie 'urban slang' for 'no worries' or 'no problems'. But even more entertainingly, I understand the etymology hinges upon understanding the particular 'Spoonerism' by which - being derived from the mythical phrase 'no wucking furries' - one must mentally transpose accordingly!

Correct?

Spot on, Baz. I knew you'd work that one out quick smart. Smiley

I have endeavoured to bring something analogous into French and German but failed dismally. Partly because they don't swear quite like us. So the closest I've come is 'pas de wuckas', only current among a very small group of Paris-resident kangourous and a couple of hangers-on.

Daniel! Yes! Tremendous effort! Give that man some points.

Thankyou, Ollie.

I'm not sure what proper protocol is in the presence of a points zillionaire, but I hope it is acceptable if I allow myself a small, northern american 'yee-ha' in celebration. These small amounts go a long way for us who trundle along on the low road.

I think a yee-ha of whatever size or nationality you deem fit is entirely appropriate.

Among a certain class of poster an utterance along the lines of 'watch your back, Sudden, one slip and you'll be getting mud all over your face and my tread marks all over your back' is also de rigueur. As you wish.  Cool

I've been sitting here most of the day trying to get some work done and seeing all these puzzles going by and refusing myself the indulgence of getting involved and taking time and attention away from the matters at hand

A likely story, Member Barrett.  Cool

We note that we are still awaiting the snatches to which Member Barrett so tantalisingly alluded not so long ago. He did did he not mention three ready candidates? They could so easily all be posted in one message for our delectation and our lives thereby considerably enriched.

They could, but first we should have to rip, edit and compress them, and we are afraid this would take even more valuable time and attention away from our giving the world more of the incoherent garbage a pitifully small subset of its population has come to expect from us.

Rip, edit and compress? The work of a few minutes dear fellow! In with ItUNES, trim with audacity (so to speak), export as mp3 and up to sendspace. Done.

Think of the pleasure we your dear audience might derive from just a few minutes' effort on your part!

I suppose it might be time we began to consider such things, after all these years.

Thank goodness! I could make out the word 'verschlingt' and, being convinced it was Berg(!) came across the Goethe poem Grenzen der Menschheit.
We were of course hardly minded to pick some Brahms that sounded like Brahms. On the other hand as with the Bach excerpt we know nothing else of his that goes quite so far in this direction!

A Request

As mentioned just now on the competition thread, it will greatly simplify the calculation of points if Members quote in their answers the message where the puzzle to which they are replying was originally set. We experienced in the case of the recent Glarse snatch for instance - all that Dance1 Dance 5 kerfuffle - considerable difficulty in tracking down what on Earth Members were talking about. So, always connect! Sooner or later this requirement will go into the Rules and Members will have to be docked seventy-five points for not doing so.

We suppose that quoting the "Reply #" will be sufficient? Or should we always employ the quote boxes?

We see here potentially a fine opportunity for Members desirous of garnering negative Points to do so!

...who shall heal the pains of him whose balm turned to poison, who drank hatred of mankind from the abundance of love? If any sound from your psaltery can reach his ear, O father of love, refresh his heart!
What a beautiful poem and a fantastic setting that is, too. Has Reiner Torheit heard it?

I like the Nathalie Stutzmann recording made with Sir Colin Davis.

We regret to inform Mr Sudden that neither Puzzle 208 nor Puzzle 210 are Charles Koechlin's Après-midi d'Octobre.
It was worth a try Wink

Alas we have no really helpful ideas as to the identity of either work and thematic connections with the Shostakovich Symphony no. 2 "October" do not yield readily to the assistance of Mr Google.
