I seem to think that the overture to Rienzi has castanets - so do they occur elsewhere in the opera too?

Plenty of cymbal and triangle at the end of the Overture, but no castanets, so it's not Rienzi!

Nothing ventured, etc., although this will probably plunge me deeply enough into the abyss that I'll be sharing Richard's snorkel.

If it's Wagner and castanets, it must be Tannhäuser, no?

Das Liebersverbot?

...is the correct answer, Ron! I've used the Overture before on musical 'guess the composer' evenings and nobody identifies the composer as Wagner. The 'for good measure' clue was supposed to lead you to Liebersverbot, which is based on Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.

Mr. D. -20 for reply 101 (incorrect answer)

Is any of the unsolved puzzles The Last Rose of Summer arranged by Britten? That's purely a guess - I haven't actually listened to any of the snatches - but I might be lucky. Grin

Also btw SG, how do you know that my answer was incorrect since I was suggesting it for any of the unsolved puzzles. I believe you're assuming that I'm not taking this competition seriously.

Puzzle 7: Haydn Symphony 95, C minor?

Alas no. I've revealed the answer on the discussion thread by popular demand: it is indeed Haydn and in C minor but the symphony is no. 52. (Now I was surprised to read someone say it didn't sound like Haydn because to me it sounds exactly like Haydn. But not really like the Haydn of symphonies 90-odd, no...)

Sadly, Madame Antheil, that is an incorrect response, although we can appreciate how one arrived at such a conclusion.  Wink
