Puzzle 267 - Andre Jolivet - La fleche du temps?

Correct Madame Antheil! You will see why we told Member Garnett that his stab was not quite a bull's-eye. The frightfully discordant work calls for an ensemble of twelve stringed instruments and appeared in 1973.

Puzzle 232, but only from Richard's clue not from intimate knowledge of the work:

Thomas Arne: Alfred?

Thomas Arne: Alfred?
It's not by Arne, though you're heading in the right direction. Another clue, which you might have missed, was that it's by a composer noted for writing music which makes use of repeating ground bass patterns.

Not King Arthur, George (which heaven forfend, since breaking the rules by snatching from a stage work would surely bring down upon my head the wrath of Grew), though it is indeed Purcell.

D'oh. Of course. I'd forgotten that. I'm a bit of a novice on the etiquette of this snatch business.

Maybe it's one of Purcell's more triumphalist Odes then but I can't place it. A guess to keep this post on topic: 'Fly, bold rebellion' ?

Puzzle 266: Sydney Grew the Elder dates this at 1740 - that is to say among the last of the composer's works; but Grove simply sets it in 1726 along with a lot of other cantatas.

"You have been told O Man what is good and what the Lord requires of you" - that is how the work begins.

We can only assume this to be J. S. Bach's cantata BWV 45 "Es ist dir gesagt, Mensch, was gut ist".

1635 + 180 = 1815

A further clue re. Puzzle 235:
Some consider the title to be an allusion to a work by Honegger. Such must surely be discounted.

Is it Pacific 3 - 2 - 1 - Zero?  From Scratch.  Philip Dadson in NZ.

Well you have scored, Antheil. Well done! Have yourself a banana:

Re Puzzle 235 - I think Mr. Grew still allows a "joker" post without losing points.  It took a bit of digging Bryn until your final clue - two correct answers in one day - what has happened  Cheesy

And I now appear to have a massive 750 points ...
