A second clue for Puzzle 258 (Puzzle 258 - SendSpace or Rapidshare)

The composition is a transcription of a song by his compatriot.

16056 + 75 = 16131

A third clue....there's a very definite link to the title of a Haydn String Quartet used in this thread not so long ago...  Wink

16521 + 75 = 16596

Another stab at 232 then:

Purcell: Sound the trumpet, beat the drum?

Not quite!

Oooh! Let's try Nørgård's 4th Symphony then...

16596 + 10 = 16606

Well done. I was listening to it earlier today and I must say I find it tremendously beautiful, a distillation of everything that makes Nørgård's music special.

Hurrah! Is that the movement titled Indian Rose Garden? I don't know any of Nørgård's music, though your clue about having written six symphonies so far led me to him almost straight away, although it appears he's published a 7th in 2006. I recall there being a bit of a hoohah at TOP about the 6th's premiere at the Proms a few years back. The clip in 272 immediately struck me as a quite beautiful soundworld, so I'll have to add it to my list... I assume it's the Chandos recording?

16606 + 180 = 16786

I calculate that, having solved 272 minutes before a full 24 hours have elapsed, that Mr Barrett has earned an extra 95 bonus points.

One more stab before bed:

Purcell: Why, why are all the Muses mute?

Phew!

Now IGI's 258 would be an arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Song of the Lark from the Seasons? By Alexander Gauk?

A further clue towards 260 then: our composer is not so well known as his offspring!  Wink

So, we know he's English, has famous offspring and the composition has a 'wet' feel to it.

As a third clue, this double-barrelled dad favoured brevity: "Why", he would ask his pupils, “write six pages, when six bars will do?"

16786 + 75 = 17861

Right nationality, right bird, but wrong composer and composition, sadly, Mr Garnett.

Mr IGI's 260 must be Mr William Lloyd Webber's Frensham Pond which perhaps Mr IGI has got to know by plunging into it himself?

It is indeed, Mr Garnett, and is certainly a piece I first got to know by playing it, although I'd recommend the Nash Ensemble's Antony Pay in preference to my splashy attempts!  Wink Congratulations and 180 points to you!

As this was set on 03 March 2008, 23:31:02, I calculate a bonus of 293 points (3 days, 1 hour and 15 minutes)

17861 +  293 = 18154 points
