Hurrah! I do enjoy Bax's music and have several of his chamber works, played by the Nash Ensemble. A favourite is the Elegiac Trio, for the same forces as Debussy's for Flute, Viola and Harp.

Curses! Foiled again by the cardinal scurge. Still, I did enjoy watching him squirm in the land of Serenades!

Puzzle 352: SS or RS Puzzle 353: SS or RS Puzzle 354: SS or RSIt wouldn't surprise you to learn that these pieces share a musical connection! A first clue to No.354, which is the only one to attract some offers so far: it is not usually performed on the clarinet and is not English!

Bit quiet here this evening. How about a few clues?
Someone did get the composer of no.325 right. It's the first piece in a collection of 29.
Nobody has taken a shot at no.333 yet. I would have thought it's pretty obvious who the composer is, and he has even featured in another recent Puzzle, though in a rather different style, and I surely am not alone in thinking that the tenor solo, once heard, is difficult to forget.
The composer of no.348 is well-known as an instrumentalist, but not on either of the instruments playing in this snatch.

Heaven forfend that I should break Mr Grew's iron law by setting a theatre piece as a Puzzle! Really, Mr Inquisitor, what kind of scoundrel do you take me for? Anyway, it is not by Charpentier.

That is the case, indeed, given that no. 348 is the Intermezzo I from Lieder ohne Worte II by Heinz Holliger.

Still affected by the heady rush of having identified no. 348, I trust correctly, I will recklessly posit that #333 is Krzysztof Penderecki's Utrenja, a work I have never heard but have long meant to. Have I heard it, then, if only briefly?

Mr Johnson is correct on both counts: no.348 is from Holliger's Lieder ohne Worte while no.333 is from Penderecki's Utrenja, as it was spelled on the LP cover, but Jutrznia as it is on the CD on a different label of the same recording.

Thanks to Mr Barrett for clarification about Puzzle No.327, which we suggest might be from Monteverdi's 8th Book of Madrigals?

Oh come off it IGI, you're not allowed to get them that quick. Under a minute!
Yes. You are correct.
Now I'll have to find another snatch and spend an age editing / posting.

It is in fact not from this book. I wouldn't have been able to identify no.360, but I do find it irksome that it was solved even before I managed to get it to download.
