Mix of rain and sun here in Yorkshire - in Leeds it was sunny this afternoon but on the way over, it threw it down for a few minutes. It always seems to rain on the A64, I don't know why!

the first bee of the year bumbled into the house and required a good deal of persuasion to buzz off.
I've just had the same experience. I tried telling it nicely that it really wouldn't be happy in the house, but it didn't seem to understand......it was the size of a mouse. Ah, sounds as though it was a cousin of the one that bumbled in here today. It was HUGE With an extremely loud bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Still, no bees, rain or thunder now. Blue sky, fluffy clouds and sunshine. Well, not fluffy sunshine, obviously ... I'm surprised these are the first bees of the year - we've had bumble bees here for a while (but I encourage them with a bee house and a stick pile). Ours are Bombus terrestris, buff-tailed bees, which have a rounded pale rump and no sting - I think they're enormously endearing but then we've never had one in the house.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Mine was the first one in the house, pw. We've had them in the garden for quite a while. I always love to see them in their proper place!

We have more than one type. Don't the buff-tailed ones sting?

Not the males and drones. I believe the Queens can, but only in extremis and very rarely.

Only when strongly provoked. Mind you, bees can get rather aggressive in stormy weather. Back in the '80s I was working on a project to develop ways of deterring honey bees from visiting orchards when they were to be sprayed with insecticide, (I was on a work placement connected with my undergrad studies at the time). Close to the hives we were using was a bumble bee nest. One of the senior researchers decided to show how relatively docile bumble bees were. He prodded away at the entrance to the subterranean nest with a forefinger, and very soon gave a yelp and jumped back.

The male bees are the drones. Since bee stings are modified ovipositors it is hardly surprising that the males have no sting.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I'm getting fed up with this weather. I was at Edgbaston yesterday for Warks' game against Leics and it was really chilly. Also it rained a lot so play was interrupted several times. By 4-30 I'd had enough. Play hasn't started yet today but if it does I'm not sure whether I'll bother to go.

Oh lummee, the rains have just swept in along with thunder and lightening I arrived home after work yesterday looking like a drowned rat (having forgotten brolly) and it continued to pour down all evening and it was SO COLD I landed up with 4 layers of clothing on plus cwtching up under the throw on the sofa! Today is (so far) dryish but black clouds looming and again very cold. I see our forecast is for this to continue through to Sunday. So it'll be a typical Bank Holiday wash-out I suppose. I don't know if it's anything to do with the weather but I have never, ever, seen the apple and cherry trees so absolutely laden with blossom.

Very annoyed that the BBC are forecasting the heaviest rain of the week to be on Friday, when I'm having a day out in York Well, maybe it will flood... at least that will be exciting

Oh lummee, the rains have just swept in along with thunder and lightening Looking at the weather maps, that lot is headed towards me Still no play at Warks, next inspection at 1250, though there are some patient supporters there who I can hear on the BBC Cov & Warks live net broadcast - when they're not doing the commentary, the mike is left open.
