The name Jonathan Meades comes unbidden to mind as fitting the description.

That's him! I don't believe you really got that from my description  Cheesy

Mort, thank you for reminding me about the iPlayer. It never worked with old computer but I must see if it's any happier on my new one.

Meanwhile, back on topic, here's a pic I took yesterday of St Andrew's in Ombersley, Worcs (I was there for the cricket btw, not because the church was named after me Cheesy)

I don't have access to a guide book, but I think Omberseley is an example of C18 Gothick - the details are not as harsh as in C19 Gothic.  I must check when I get back.

Ombersley was designed c1830 by Thomas Rickman, the Quaker who devised those useful terms for the periods of English Gothic, Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular.  The interior used to be very Georgian in feel, according to my Collins Church Guide (ed. J Betjeman.)

Thanks Don B. I feel inspired to go and take some more church pix. Also some Black Country pubs, been meaning to do that for ages. I've already got some good ones of the Crooked House at Gornal, must look them out - they're on film. It's really called the Glynne Arms but it's assumed a very odd shape due to mining subsidence.

Was going to say "That's very effective, Ron" but I have my old English teacher's words echoing in my ears: "Never write it's effective". She was referring to writing about poetry but perhaps it applies to photographs too? Nice pic anyway! Cheesy I like the contrasting white of the memorial and the church* with the dark shade of the gravestones.

*I'll have to go back on the thread to see if you called it a church or a chapel or a kirk.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Paint Shop Pro has a script to make your picture look like an old photo, and then there is a border facility to provide the rough edges.  It looks like they were used here.  And rather effective, I'd say.

And this is a normal view Don B.  La Croix de Lorraine is interesting.

Oh John, you know full well what Duw, Duw, do mean.  You are mischieavious, and now you expect me to post the old chesntut about Cherry Owen and the tombstones and the old Bach, Fach You,  gag don't you?

Well, how about Eli Jenkins' words?

"REV. ELI JENKINS

Oh angels be careful there with your knives and forks,

        FIRST VOICE

he prays. There is no known likeness of his father Esau,
who, undogcollared because of his little weakness, was
scythed to the bone one harvest by mistake when sleeping
with his weakness in the corn. He lost all ambition and
died, with one leg.

        REV. ELI JENKINS

Poor Dad,

 grieves the Reverend Eli,

        REV. ELI JENKINS

to die of drink and agriculture."

Oh, I am so sorry, that really cracks me up!

Is it time for Dr. Who?
