I haven't read all the way back on this thread, and I may be answering the wrong question, but (assuming Num Lock is turned on on your keyboard, which it normally is, on my desktop at work at least) the quickest way to get all foreign accents is to hold ALT while typing the 4-digit code, which for è is 0232. (NB You have to type it in the numbers over to the right of the keyboard, not the ones along the top. If you're using a laptop (as I do at home), you probably only have one set of numbers and Num Lock is probably turned off, in which case things are slightly more complicated. But I only normally use my laptop for Microsoft Word, not for internet forums, so I don't run into this problem so often.

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

Thank you time_is_now. I do not have many occasions to use the accents, but it just seemed a bit daft to make a keyboard with a ` and then not be able to place it above a letter!
In fact, my NumLock is on all the time unless I particularly switch it off because the Supernova uses of the keys there takes precedence over regular use.

Are you all intent on just using the keyboard? Why don't you just download "character map". You can put any accent on then just by select/copy and then in your message control and v. That's what I do.

No, I do not mind which method I use! I just like to know why things are as they are ..... although as far as computers are concerned, I come to the end of my level of understanding very quickly!

Milly is very happy today. Child is at the cinema with friends and then out for lunch so I'm whizzing round at home doing all the jobs I can without any interruptions. No. 2 son has just rung me from Gran Canaria to say that he has landed safely and is looking forward to his week's holiday. Says it wasn't a comfortable flight because there wasn't enough leg-room (he's a long-leggedy beastie). He says it's very hot there - about 24 degrees. He's very happy because Man U won yesterday. I haven't heard from no. 1 son by phone yet because he hasn't emerged from last night's footballs celebrations - although he said last night that Liverpool really should have won to be fair as they played the better game in his opinion. Well it's pouring down here and very grey but the sea looks reasonably calm - no huge waves - just a bit choppy. Back to the ironing..... Happy day to all of you!!!!

I am happy, because I am finished for the day. The washing machine was fixed in the morning before I left for exams, exams went reasonably well. Who elese is happy today beside Lord Byron and me?

Me also. I'm happy. House gradually (very gradually) getting back to normal after room redecoration and no time to do anything. Only about 400 books left to sort. Just got back from swimming after school. It's been bitterly cold here, but sunny. The weather forecast is for gales and rain overnight so we've battened down the hatches and snuggled down here for the evening. All is well.

I'm happy The performance of Elijah I was forced to go to is over (and very loud it was), so I feel virtuous. There are primroses in the garden:

Oh, they are so beautiful, Mary Chambers. I love them. I am glad Milly that your place is gradually will be more comfortable. The wind is strong now and it rains, so it is good to be at home with everything tide and anchored. Well, this goes another post, so that noone can catch up with me.
