I think he is mainly known in Ireland. He has some connections in France and often goes to Monacco. I think he's also unknown in the Netherlands, t-p. Thanks for the information. It's always nice to discover a new author. I don't think I share his views, but I like to read authors whose views I don't share.

Jan, you will probably have seen 2 , they always fly in pairs ( at least they always have when I have seen them) The female ( as usual ) is not as pretty as the male however. I had fruit trees in my garden 'up north' and we saw them regularly.... lovely , distinctive birds ... I am glad you have seen one. A

Are you near Bromley, Baz? My friend there says there is a flock around there...
I didn't see the female bullfinch as far as I'm aware, A, will keep my eyes peeled !

I was just sitting in the garden eating my sandwiches when I looked down and gazing at me from behind the water feature was a young squirrel. I grabbed hold of the dog, not because he would be any sort of threat because he wouldn't, but I didn't want it to be frightened. It scampered off and is now sitting quite contentedly in the lilac. Gorgeous little thing - pity I didn't have my camera handy when it was very close.

Possibly it might be - but current estimates for ring-necked parakeets in London range from anything between 10,000 and 30,000 (mostly in the south-east quadrant, but with pockets also in the western suburbs). They are particularly fond of colonising graveyards! Baz

Baz, One of the biggest complaints that I`ve heard about parakeets is that they are noisy little beggers and some people have suggested culling them. That could account for the graveyard preference. No complaints from the neighbours there! I`ve seen a few `flights` of them in Hampstead, but I suspect the Canadian Geese tell them where to get off

No complaints from the neighbours there! I`ve seen a few `flights` of them in Hampstead, but I suspect the Canadian Geese tell them where to get off Mort, The real problem with them (apart from their cacophonous noise) is the danger they present to native indiginous birds like the woodpecker. The parakeets steal the holes they make for nesting purposes. They also pose a potential threat to farmers (if the population continues to explode). It is also illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 for anybody to release them into the wild - so they are all automatically "illegal" (but here the law seems to have become a real ass!). More info at ( inter alia) http://www.vino.demon.co.uk/fong/parak.htmlBaz

They are lovely though Baz, and I saw a woodpecker the same evening I saw parakeets so they are not swamping them.... yet!!! A
