I might have looked just like this and been no better than a second-hand car salesman.

Just a quick hello from Acapulco, where t_i_n is very ... well, happy, I suppose. Had a lovely weekend in Mexico City - arrived Friday evening, clubbing Friday night (best way to deal with jetlag is resisting the temptation to sleep), lovely wedding party on Saturday - and we drove here on Sunday afternoon. I{m having an afternoon in the shade after two days on the beach (it{s well over 30 degrees here, which is hot for June), so I{m in a tiny cafe with one internet terminal. Hope everyone is well. Back online properly next week.

Happy, happy, happy! Our elder son is to be married tomorrow in the Lake District so let's hope the weather keeps up. I'm driving up tomorrow first thing and staying overnight so looking forward to a lovely day and a nice break being pampered in a hotel. They're off to Puerto Banus for their honeymoon and they've just informed me that they'd like me to feed the cat while they're away. Hmm. Ok then. I did this once before when they were on holiday, rather grudgingly, because I'm not much of a cat fan as I like the birds so much. They assured me that the cat was 15 years old and had never ever ever killed a bird in its life! Off I went and it is in fact a beautiful cat, long-haired black with white feet and very friendly and affectionate. However, guess what it presented me with when I turned up to feed it on the last day? One massacred starling. Immediately the cry went up "well it's never done that before!!!" Yeah right! Well you have to see the funny side don't you?

Milly,
would I be right in thinking you're more of a doggy person, given your avatar?
My other half reckons he's a cat person and I'm a doggy person. It's not a matter of pets, but personal attitude to food, living space etc.
Hope you and your family have a lovely time in the Lake District. Let us know about the music.
I just came across a gorgeous air in Handel's Susanna called Chastity, thou Cherub bright. Not very appropriate for weddings nowadays.
I'm happy because my mother is out of hospital and into a rehabilitation centre. Thanks to those who sent good wishes.

I'm going to get flamed for this by the board's cat lovers, and it's not exactly Happy Room stuff, but here goes ... There is no more vicious predator in the UK than the domestic cat. A survey for the Mammal Society in 2001 estimated that the UK's eight million domestic moggies finished off 275 million animals and birds per year - that's more than thirty each. Predation by cats is a major environmental problem. And just because they're well-fed and cared-for doesn't mean they won't do it. Much of this - but by no means all - takes place at night. So anyone who allows their cat out at night - or at any time without a loud bell or sonic collar - is basically aiming a Scud missile at our already threatened fauna.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I think that you'll find that the vast majority of cat "kills" are mice and rats. Ask a farmer.

I should have quoted the URL for the research, which includes a breakdown of numbers of creatures brought home by cats: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/~nhi775/cat_predation.htmIn summary: Mammals 69% (20 species), birds 24% (44 species), amphibians 4%

I don't own a cat but every year I have to bury a half-eaten bird or two I find in my garden that some cat has got bored with. I never seen any dead mice, rats or other animals. Perhaps they're much tastier.
