Milly, I had to do a swift double take when I read that post. I thought it said`Houseful of chicken from 11.30 till teatime. The images it gave me were bizarre to say the least! They do sound like chickens from a distance I have to admit.... They're all here and variously positioned in playroom or on Play Station or watching tv whilst I do party lunch. It isn't a special occasion - but I just love having a houseful of kids. It's the happy laughter and fun conversations. Makes life worth living.

Don't they ever fight?
I quite miss the long and elaborate plays my kids and their friends used to do in the garden. Well, not quite do - it tended to be hours of "I'll be Mole, you be Ratty" and " I want to be Toad!". Not sure that the plays ever actually happened.

We used to act out plays as children as there were 4 of us, born within 6 years so close in age. As we sisters got older, we grew out of the lovely princess dress (an old bridesmaid dress of my mum's - I still have it!) so we'd force our one of our younger brothers to wear it...There was always a bear in our plays as we had an old fur coat too. Happy memories! (Perhaps not so happy for the boys though!)

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

My younger son, aged about six, had a strange habit of wrapping a blanket round his head like a headscarf, and standing outside the bathroom when I was attending his elder brother saying in a squeaky voice, "It's the cleaning lady". Nobody has any idea where this came from, where he got the idea that cleaning ladies wore headscarves, or why he did it. When I mentioned it to him recently he said he thought it was a way of getting into the bathroom - in other words, he felt left out.
Ah, dressing up...I had bits of old evening dresses, rust coloured velvet with matching 1920s style shoes, white velvet (I just loved that one), chiffon you could drape. My elder brother never joined in! We didn't have clothes for bears - that would have been fun. I did ballets more than plays.

Hmm. Stanley, do you happen to have a spare bear suit that you don`t need at the moment?

Hand-picked to get on. In fact I only ever had one child here that clashed with the resident alpha male and that was another alpha male. Now that day was an interesting one! Normally, you get the odd little squabble if two want to do the same thing, but nothing to speak of. There's plenty for them all to do here. It's just a shame that the weather is wet and they can't go out on the climbing frame apparatus. I just popped out and the slide is sopping wet and so is the bark where they'd all land. The ground is too wet to play football or basketball, so they're all in the house - but so far so good and they enjoyed lunch. A friend of mine is coming round having prepared a special little buffet for the two of us so I needed to get the kids fed first. I might take them out on the beach later if the rain holds off.

Fond memories of my daughter announcing a "play" involving her friend and friend's younger brother:
"I'm the prince, Rachel's the princess and Tom is our chicken."

I don't think these are old enough to devise plays yet. I could help them to do one of course but I'm selfishly doing my laundry and ironing instead. They're all absorbed in what they're doing. So far so good. My friend hasn't turned up with the food yet so I'm getting a bit peckish.
