It's quite a big book, edited by Christopher Grogan of the Britten-Pears Library - her life, her music, and her complete Aldeburgh diaries 1952-54. It's rather stopped me from doing all the things I should have been doing today. Interesting insights on Gloriana and Winter Words in the diaries, not to mention domestic life - somehow I'd never imagined Pears as being the kind of man who pruned roses and wallpapered bedrooms!!

That's good news, t-p. Smiley

I'm feeling a bit cheerier myself these days, although with a curious urge to stay at home all weekend rather than going out in the evenings (as I imagined I would start doing again once I finished my writing projects). Anyway, feeling content to stay home is better than feeling anxious about going out, so I guess that counts as an improvement ...

Oh joy, oh joy, this year's royalty cheque for the PTO Orangery Concert CD arrived today. A three figure sum (including the pence). What shall I spend it on? Wink

The only royalties I ever received were for a poem published in an anthology.
I seem to recall that I received something like 11p.

I've got a date for my viva: 20th September. Doctordom just gets closer and closer!

This rather reminds me of the late Albi Rosenthal, whose father knew Schönberg quite well during the composer's last years and who told the story that Schönberg called early one morning in a very anxious tone of voice wanting to come round to see him and, when he did so, he brandished a piece of paper, protesting "these are my royalties for one whole year!" and the amount was apparently $4.34; apart from any other consideration, the sheer irony of one-upmanship over his erstwhile pupil's 4'33" was not entirely lost on me when I heard this...

Best,

Alistair

Yesterday had a great day in Manchester at the Dr. Who exhibition, the railway museum and the science museum.  Greatly enjoyed by all, especially small child.  The only criticism I'd have is of the usual rip-offs in the cafe and gift shop.  Two adults and one child at lunchtime - 3 sandwiches, 3 drinks and a packet of crisps = £16.00!  Then I bought him a souvenir pen with a tardis sound effect - only a biro with a battery - £9.00!  That was the cheapest thing in the shop that I could see.

Today had lunch with my best friend from school and a friend she'd brought along (while youngster went to play at a friend's house) which was great.  Then shopping.....tonight playing cards....oh what fun Cheesy
