Happy, happy, happy! All the chiddlers have gone and there was only one "episode" when the resident alpha pushed a visitor off the top bunk. No serious harm done fortunately, just a bruised shin and hurt pride. Hell of a crash though! We were downstairs having our buffet and stopped in mid-munch. I was up the stairs to investigate like a rocket - but an amicable conclusion was reached within a couple of minutes after bribery with apologies and double chocolate muffins.  Young alpha is now requesting scrambled eggs on toast for tea (and the rest of the muffins). |

Yeah.... Need to tidy up first  Significant tidying was done. All the files and papers. Vinyl and CDs untouched because I need to boringly catalogue them  geek, though I played an LP, Menuhin's Beehoven Op 61, can't get into Beethoven violin concerto though nice tunes, yet the LP sleeve notes make it sound so interesting. |

Very happy, well, strictly speaking, very relieved, that I've caught a very enterprising mouse that took up residence in my bedroom... It was one that Katie had brought in but she'd lost interest in it. Under my bed, mousey had found a carrier bag in which was a bar of FairTrade chocolate. He'd made a hole in the bag, pulled out the chocolate bar and dragged it (I presume - I wish I'd witnessed this!) under the dressing-table drawers to nibble. Hearing a rustling sound I called in little R, expert mouse-catcher, to investigate and she discovered the nibbled chocolate under the drawers. She then put the chocolate inside a welly with the open end under the drawers and a few hours later we caught mousey nibbling his chocolate inside the welly trap. I did give him the rest of the bar to finish when I released him into the garden.  If you think this clever mousey was a female please substitute she for he, her for his etc. Do you think I should carry out a poll?  |

eek... we've had successive invasions of mice here (not via a cat) and we were advised to always carry them at least a quarter of a mile (in the trap) away from the house. But it would be less easy to carry out successfully with a welly I suppose! |

eek... we've had successive invasions of mice here (not via a cat) and we were advised to always carry them at least a quarter of a mile (in the trap) away from the house.
But it would be less easy to carry out successfully with a welly I suppose!
Big difference is our mice don't choose to come into the house - not with 4 cats living here! So once released back into the garden they have no urge to return. There are so many mice out there and they seem to be very easy to catch. We hear the tawny owls hooting every night so it's not just cats these mice have to watch out for. And the kids saw mummy fox carrying a mouse in her mouth a while ago. I expect her very large cubs catch their own now. |

Imogen Holst .. now I might read that . A most interesting person,and very little-written-about.
I remember being quite shocked when I read her book about her father's music , then I think the only one available ('The Music of Gustav Holst',1951). . She seemed so harshly critical of so much of his output (even the poor old Planets!) that I wondered if there was a sort of reverse Elektra complex at work there.
It seemed odd because she was so dedicated to getting the music published and recorded. I thijnk a lot of it might have sunk into oblivion without her Argo and Lyrita recordings.
