Mort,
Wet Walnuts are yummy - I've eaten them straight. But are they any good for Walnut Cake?

Tommo, I think they are too scrummy, and shortlived, to squander on a walnut cake. And I love Walnut Cake. Hmmm, haven`t made one of those in a while ...... Mary, there is a bit of confusion over the cob nut/filibert/hazelnut issue. I think they`re probably all related but cob nuts are longer than hazelnuts. That`s the only way I can think of to describe them. And they have a smoother texture, but then I`ve never eaten fresh hazelnuts

It does seem there is a subtle difference. Here's what Hugh Fearnley-Whatsit has to say - if you scroll down it says "A cobnut is a type of cultivated hazelnut. The word filbert is also sometimes used." http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,2163658,00.htmlThe Kentish Cobnut Association (isn't it wonderful what can be found if you google? ) says that a cobnut is a type of hazelnut, just as Bramley is a type of apple, only the different types taste more similar than different varieties of apple do.

Thanks for the heads up on wet walnuts, Mort. I went searching for them, I suppose it must have been this time last year, when you mentioned them at the Other Place. No luck then, but I'm determined to find them this year.
And I never knew what filberts were before. Being a Kentish Man, or possibly a Man of Kent, I now feel rather ashamed of that.
"I'll bring thee/To clust'ring filberts"
The embarrassing thing is I now realise that I had unconsciously furnished myself with a vague mental image of what Caliban's 'filberts' might be - and they were a bit different. Sort of nutty figs with hairy husks. Goodness knows why.
Right. Tomorrow's shopping list:

but then I`ve never eaten fresh hazelnuts And, judging by the smug look on the squirrel's face this morning as I caught him scampering out of my young hazel tree, neither will I. For the last couple of years I've noticed little green nuts developing in the late summer then none there the next time I look. (Mine's not a contorted hazel.)

Being a Kentish Man, or possibly a Man of Kent.... George, I take from that that Mrs Garnet Senior gave birth somewhere on the Medway....? Tommo

Medway Chewy Toffee, Ron. It's kind of oaty and nutty, sticks to the roof of your mouth but you end up with a very clean tongue. The new pants are just a precaution for the day after really in case I get the proportions in the Araldite mix a bit wrong again. I thought I would take this opportunity to get this Man of Kent/Kentish Man business sorted out once and for all. I've consulted my mother about where she was on the day in question, plotted the relevant events on the map and consulted the Rev. Naomi Wolf's Social History of the Kentish People (online edition). If anyone is interested it turns out that, having been born east of the Medway, I am a Maid of Kent. This may explain why I have always felt a natural inclination to wear my filberts on the left. Ah, how well I remember those glorious summers of long ago, what fun we had after a hard day's hop picking in the Garden of England. Half a dozen Whitstables inside us and we were away.
