Stéphane Denève's in charge of the RSNO, now: definitely an up and comer. He specialises in French and Russian repertoire: we had Ravel's Mother Goose and Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances as the rest of the programme: last year he did a fabulous Roussel 3 and La Valse. He's doing a Roussel cycle with them for Naxos. He has brilliant audience rapport: he does a short introduction at some point in each concert in a wonderful accent with great humour: he looks like a gangly absent minded professor with a shock of curly reddish-brown hair, but he gets on with the job without distracting gestures, letting the music speak for itself. The strings this year sound particularly fine, by the way.

We get five concerts a year from them: the next is Britten Sinfonia da Requiem, Rückert Lieder and Belshazzar's Feast, with Roderick Williams as the soloist, and Hickox conducting: the programme's not the same for each city: Edinburgh and Glasgow get nearly everything, while the repeats are shared out between Dundee, Perth, Inverness, Dunfermline and Aberdeen, though Dundee gets more than the rest.

Thank you, A.

bbm:
Although it looks like typical English beechwood, it's actually tucked away in Scotland, between Carnoustie and Forfar. Walk for less than a mile and you can see the Cairngorms, a mile and a bit the other way and you're at a spot I've photographed regularly, (near to the village of Whigstreet, if you've a road atlas to hand).

You've always got a road atlas to hand with Unfortunately the satellite image changes from high to low definition just south of Whigstreet so no chance of making out your wood.

Great pictures btw Ron. My better camera has been away since mid-August getting repaired. There's a small dead area in the image, only 2 pixels square but, as it was under guarantee, I decided to get it fixed. The first time it came back the fault was still there so I took it straight back in - that was a month ago and I'm still without it.  Angry (sorry, should be in the grumpy room)

who I believe gave an early premiere of a work by one Peter Maxwell Davies (on Children's Hour...)
