It's in Ibiza, an island in the Mediterranean, t-p: looking down towards the harbour from the the fortified High Town in the capital. It's a busy place, with the buildings all squashed together, so I guess they built where they could. You see it quite often in places by the sea anyway: think of all those rock-built castles. It makes a place easier to fortify: making it stronger and safer, and gives better sight-lines as well.

herb de Provence

A pedant writes (in the wrong thread) Don't you mean herbes?

I did think that (though originally I said herbs but I looked at the jar to see what it said so at least I can blame someone else...

Just hoping now that my tax is in the right bracket, and that my council tax band hasn't mysteriously slipped up from that quoted to me before purchase. I might celebrate by going to the shops and buying a new pair of jeans (provided I can find a pair that I like).

Here's today's warming picture - though at least it's bright here (for the moment):

Mmmmm! It looks swimmable!

Paradise? It's just an open-air chillout room, isn't it?

I'm feeling particularly happy this evening. I've just returned from seeing the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haïdouks in concert - an exhilerating performance. I first heard of them on CDR this summer and they're super.

After a particularly difficult year, I've decided the time has come for a break and I'm heading off to the Malverns for a long weekend, armed with my new camera (thanks to Ron's recommendation). I've had a bit of a play with it and look forward to putting it to good use on the hills. Here's a quick snap I took in the garden:

I hope to post some pictures in the Photographs thread on my return!  Smiley

They were at Birmingham Town Hall on Wednesday IGI. I read about the concert but, as I didn't know them at all, I didn't feel sufficiently inspired to go, perhaps I should have done.

What sort of camera did you get?

Nice robin picture btw. I saw some nuthatches today but as I only had my little 3x zoom camera with me there was no point in even trying to get a shot.

It was a very good evening, Andy - not the sort of thing I would normally go to, but after hearing Taraf de Haïdouks on CDR earlier in the year, I'd bought a couple of their CDs. First, there was a set by Forty Thieves Orkestar - a sort of Eastern European/Klezmer/Arabian style - who impressed (bought their CD in the interval). Then Taraf treated us to a 1hr 40 min set(!) largely based on their recent disc Maskarada, which takes classical 'folk' music and presents it back in its folk form, so Bartok's Romanian Dances, some Khachaturian, the Ritual Fire Dance, Albeniz's Asturias alongside some of their traditional Romanian gypsy repertoire, all performed with amazing vigour. The only negative, for me, was that the music was amplified too much (perhaps I'm just getting old!)

A Canon PowerShot S5 IS, which is a very significant advance on my last one! We had a Tudor Day at school on Monday and I took loads of photos during my Tudor Writing sessions and was amazed how I could snap away without having to wait an age for the flash to be ready. The picture quality is also miles better.

I rather think you should have gone, Andy - they sounded completely whacky on CDR.

Here's more about the camera:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-S5-Digital-Camera/dp/B000RGM0Q4/ref=sr_1_29/203-5195004-6647130?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193955755&sr=1-29

the later, higher spec. version of what I use as my middle camera: the Ibiza and Egypt pics plus virtually all of my S.A. shots were taken with that: it's got an excellent optical zoom, and does very nicely - as IGI's robin proves very well: nice one, son!

Interesting that the clichéd view of Ibiza should surface so soon: there's a lot more to it than being the ultimate destination for hedonistic halfwits and a haven for hippies. (Does the Dough strike you as a natural denizen of either department?) There are antiquities, great beaches, secluded places and excellent food to be had, decent walking, too: I'm not suggesting that I'd go there often (there's far too much of the world left to see), but it's certainly worth a visit.

That camera looks very good for the price. I'm an Olympus man and I see that you can get the Olympus SP-560 (8MP, 18x Optical Zoom) from Amazon for £223 - it looks to be a similar camera to the Canon but I don't know anything about it. My 10x zoom 4MP Olympus cost me £300+ 3+ years ago.

Am high as a kite this morning after a fab evening out.

(1) Went for another repeat viewing of ENO's Aida Grin (my last visit)
(2) Ran into a very good friend beforehand Grin
(3) Went to pub afterwards and had a beer with a cast member (as planned) Grin
(4) Got spirited away to another pub by two other cast members.  Pub didn't kick us out till well after it should have done, and had a lengthy and highly enlightening gossip session as a result Grin
