"Bun pennies" - yes, worn smooth and dark brown, always a bit of a thrill. Now that was proper money.

We had a brilliant day yesterday at the BSCC Shell show.  Got lots of cheap shells including some which I never expected to get!

Do you have a long wish-list of shells for your collection? Is it like collecting stamps or coins, with a book listing them all alongside their current dealer prices?

Hi MJ, yes, i do have a wish list for my favourite families (Cypraea, Strombus, Engina and Terebra) but everything else I just buy what looks nice!  Yesterday I bought 6 Murex, all of which are lovely and I didn't have before.  My memory is fairly good at remembering what I have and haven't got that isn't in the above families so I don't often end up with unnecessary duplicates and, if I do, they go for sale on my website.
There's a book published fairly regularly knicknamed "Rice's Prices" which is a list of all the shells sold in the last year - it's really useful!

Indeed, and glad  to hear you sounding happier too - may it last!

My own happy news is that bar a couple of final library checks, which will be swiftly dispatched tomorrow morning, my thesis is ready to print and take to the binders. And just in time for tonight's Doctor Who repeat!

Thank you all - it is nice to be here again after the last few months of posting in the less happier parts of the forum.
On with more shell sorting out today as all the new stuff needs labels etc.
Back later...

(cross-posted at M&S)

Yay! It's with the binders! All 329 pages of it (MS Word reckons I had just 73 words left of my 100,000 allowance...)!

I woke up in a sweat at 5 am this morning, having dreamt of a load of last-minute fixes I needed to do right then. Turns out my boast above of "swiftly dispatched" library checks was a bit optimistic, and I was outside the British Library this morning at ten past 9, queuing in the rain with 150 other people waiting for the doors to open. Still, all done now, at least to my satisfaction.

My head feels like a vacuum at the moment, on the point of imploding on itself...

Here's the obligatory pre-submission, stack-of-paper money shot:

You got there. Well done, my man. A drink on me (and quite a few others I suspect) at the next meet-up.

Thanks!

My external is Adrian Thomas, Richard. Once the whole thing's properly finished (which will be after September's viva) I'll post it all somewhere online for people to download.

Milly - a good job indeed! I always said that with a PhD and a baby in the house, one of them would have to go. Luckily that's not going to happen now!

Oh no, don't do that. Wait for your CUP publishing deal and make us all pay. (Seriously!)

I was thinking of posting it to Sendspace or something and sharing the link with those that might be interested, rather than putting the whole text online - for a start that's much too much hassle for me to contemplate at the moment!

You seem to be under the misapprehension that there's money to be made from academic book deals though ...
