A new species of Irish mammal has been discovered by a student who was sorting through the contents of barn owls' stomachs before baking them in the oven. Shocked

The greater white toothed shrew - crocidura russula - is only the third new mammal to be found on the island of Ireland in almost 60 years. It is usually found in Africa, France and Germany.

Whiff of mad scientist here: is it the owls that get baked? or just the contents of their stomachs?

A - from the story Andy linked to:

Quote
Dave Tosh, from Queen's University in Belfast, was looking at owl pellets - the regurgitated food remains from owls in Tipperary and Limerick - when he came upon the skull of a greater white-toothed shrew.

"It was amongst a batch that I was about to dry in an oven. I noticed a very large shrew skull," he said.

Good point Tommo.

Shades of Gravity's Rainbow here. (hh would know what I'm talking about.)

Is anyone happy today or are we all too busy thinking about barn owls' digestive tracts? I'm feeling quite happy. Two close friends I haven't heard from for ages have called this afternoon, and another one yesterday evening. I finally seem to be getting somewhere with the piece of writing I've been trying to do all week. And it's my boyfriend's birthday - he's gone home to Portugal for a few days, but we've spoken on the phone three times and he's been on the beach in the sun.

And one of the friends who phoned this afternoon told me that George Benjamin's opera, which I ended up not going to Liverpool to hear the other week (the night I met my boyfriend, in fact!), is on the radio tonight.

Happy me ! About 3 months ago I had a puppy run under my car wheels, yell his head off and run off....I never knew what happened afterwards.

Today I saw the owner and the dog, which is FINE !!!!!!! She said it was missing for several hours, but was OK when she found it.

I'm so pleased !  Cheesy  Cheesy  Cheesy
