Don't want to be alarmist, and I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick, but I thought that at present it was illegal to listen to an ipod though car stereo.
Perhaps our technical whizz-kids can advise.

A non-whizzkid writes: the last time I took my motor carriage in for a service I was offered an iPod kit (cradle, connection to car stereo, installation costs) for £150 or so, and I would have been tempted if I weren't thinking of moving back to Germany next year and therefore selling the vehicle. I've tired one of those broadcasting gizmos and they do sound awful, not worth the bother (although they're very cheap). |

You're right Don B in that iTrips were ruled illegal in the UK (under the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949) back in 2003: BBCThe Register (who note that those using iTrips would strictly speaking be liable to pay broadcasting rights to the PRS) But an exemption was added to the act in 2006 to allow for iTrips and similar devices: BBCOfcom statementSo John W's daughter is OK. |

Well, I arrived in SUNNY  Manchester after a lovely journey. Ipod + book, what a combination. I was in the quiet zone,and everyone was! I also have an itrip but... the sound IS terrible. It has a hiss to it which doesn't go away. Disappointing but perhaps they will improve them one day who knows? A |

Dont worry, DB, the sound comes from the car audio system itself. If you buy a male to male cable, you connect your mp3/ipod etc, to the cable and the other end to the car audiosystem, so no ear phones!! |

BBM - just to clarify: the (former) illegality of iTrips was not to do with earphones, but because they work by transmitting the music from your iPod to the car stereo by radio - under the old version of the law (written in 1949, amended in 2006) they were effectively little pirate radio stations.

But I'll also tell her that someone selling her such a crappy bit of wireless kit producing such a crappy quality of music (ignoring the genre of 'music') should be illegal  So, is it illegal for me to record/digitalise a 40-year old vinyl album to a CD-R and play that CD in my car? |

Yes. That's what the record companies like to call piracy, and it funds terrorism, donchaknow. However, this part of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act is currently under review since it also means that in the UK you're not legally allowed to copy your CDs onto your computer or iPod.* The law is an ass. and play that CD in my car? Play it where you like, you pirate  *Rather more seriously, it means that the British Library isn't currently allowed to digitise any of the rapidly deteriorating tapes in its sound archive. |

Copyright in the recording lasts for 50 years, and in the music itself lasts 70 years past the death of the composer. That leaves several decades-worth of recordings at risk (and the likes of Cliff Richard, as well as the recording industry, regularly lobby to have that 50 years extended).

From what I have heard the sound quality is awful, but as it's R'n'B she doesn't mind I've never quite understood how you're supposed to get decent sound from a small FM transmitter inside a car through an aerial that is outside the car, especially now that cars tend to have metallised windscreens, increasing the Faraday cage effect. But that's probably why I don't work in marketing |

I am in the Happy Room at last, though I think HappiER Room would be a better description. Some of you may remember that a couple of weeks ago I was very distressed because my son was considering having some sort of guest-participation song (heaven knows what) with guitar and/or banjo at his wedding next month, and we had a row about it. It seems that the idea has been quietly dropped, and they are sticking to "classical" music. My relief knows no bounds. We are now able to speak to each other quite amiably, and I've made a silent vow not to comment, other than favourably, on anything they do from now on.
