I've got 20 years of Gramophone mags which I don't want - perhaps I could Freecycle them?

Best of luck with the move MJ

I am actually feeling much happier since making a radical (for me!) decision about moving. I plan to rent for 6 months then buy. Which means I can move in 11 days if all goes according to plan (haven't decided exactly where I'm going yet)...<nervously happy smiley with anxiously crossed fingers and butterflies in tummy>

Good luck with that, MJ. I'm sure doing it in two steps will relieve some of the pressure in the end. I'm doing a similar thing, but in reverse. I'm moving (hopefully) before the end of the hols - possibly early Sept - and shall sell my current house afterwards; the market's not exactly encouraging to first time buyers (who'd be most likely to purchase my place) but I'm in the fortunate position to be able to wait a bit for a buyer.

Nice to be feeling better, albeit very slowly.  I bought a lottery ticket today on account of it being 08/08/08.  The Chinese think it's very lucky so I thought I'd have a go.  Grin  (I'll let you know!)

It seems to be in first-rate condition (having come from a church) even in spite of my slightly ham-handed removal. I was mildly gratified to see, during the move, that it is old enough to have glass valves rather than transistors.

Just read the reviews on this page, some of which say nice things about my writing!

Not just your writing, I suspect; a lot to do with your whole approach.

Doing not very much at all sounds fine to me. Glad to hear it's working out well there, Jonathan. Smiley Kiss

Hello Jonathan, nice to hear from you.

Well I'm off out for the evening in a short while. Today I finished the final, definitive and absolutely unimprovable alterations to the electronic piece I mentioned the other day on the notation-teaching thread. After posting there that it had been finished a week or so earlier, I had another listen and to my great disappointment couldn't convince myself that there wasn't something wrong with the balance between the three layers at around 8 minutes in. Damn! Then I received a message from my trusty co-conspirator, along the lines of "you aren't going to like this, but I think one of the layers is a bit too quiet at 8 minutes or so." That's what 22 years of collaboration does, it's a bit frightening sometimes. So today I finally got that out of the way. I also finished work on my accounts, though I don't know if I can afford the postage to send the paperwork off to both accountants. So now I'm off to a friend's to print everything out. (Where's your printer, Richard? It's at home, but I'm in Berlin, catsitting as it happens.) Then we shall go out and enjoy ourselves.

Ho Mort, yes, everything is good!

Hi Richard,
It's funny you mentioning composing - after having had a mental block about writing my own music for about a decade, i've started writing a piano concerto in one movement.  I've got most of the themes and a sort of linear score prepared and now all i have to do is write the thing - despite still not finishing my piano transcription (which has so far taken me 10 years) of Le Chasseur Maudit...

I know what you mean.

While you're here: what do you think of the large and inexpensive CD box set of Bolet playing Liszt? I thought it might be a good way to make the acquaintance of a reasonable amount of the oeuvre.

I'm in the same neck of the woods, Jonathan, but have been VERY busy today - the trauma of major renovations, next month.     Perhaps we can say 'hello' in due course, as we missed each other at Ian Pace's Messiaen recital.   Wasn't it stunning?

Three cheers, nevertheless, when I found three long missing books when clearing hundreds from the shelves.  'Amiscellany - My Life in Music, John Amis, (1985);   'Selected Letters of Raymond Chandler', selected by Frank MacShane (1987) and, particularly, the R.A. catalogue, The Paintings of Andrew Wyeth'(1980).     I'd been to the main exhibition and with time to spare,  popped in to see the work of Wyeth, quite unknown to me.    Mind blowing.    Back to work - I now have a distinct empathy with the Flight into Egypt!

Hi again, it is a very good box set, he certainly plays very well and has the technique to deal with things like the transcendentals without effort.  I can't say i've heard the whole set (it's not one i own) but i have heard assorted recordings from it via the library and what i have heard is excellent!  Happy lisztening...
