Thank you George  Kiss.

The day was going on great - I just booked the child's next birthday party at a hotel nearby, which is always a happy occasion.

Then I opened the post and the ominous brown envelope from HM Customs told me I've underpaid my tax for last year!

It says "This underpayment has arisen because the tax code operated during this tax year does not correspond with the tax code issued by HM Revenue and Customs.  As a result, insufficient tax was deducted from your occupation for this tax year.  I propose collecting this underpayment by restricting your allowances in your tax code for the tax year commencing 6 April 2009."

I don't understand! The tax code used was the one that they sent me, so whose fault is that?

Right.  I just rang them.  'Tis the fault of my employers for not using the correct code.  Must give them a ring!!!!!

(This should be in the Grumpy Room I suppose.  I thought everything was going too well.  Angry)

It was brilliant!  I love Meryl Streep anyway but Julie Walters was amazing too - in fact they were all fantastic.  Great holiday fun.  I'd go to see it again.  My friend says she's going to get the dvd and then we'll all have a party at hers and dress up.  That'll be great fun!  Grin

I'm not sure what the collective noun for a group of musicologists is (though I can think of several ...), but here's a rather belated photo from graduation - over a month ago now.

Just catching up on this - many congratulations opi! Everyone looks tidier than I remember - or maybe that's just me!

Phew. Happy and relieved, me. The reason I have had to temporarily interrupt my idyll in The Valleys was, like hh last week, to be 'on duty' for university Clearing this week. As hh will confirm, I'm sure, Clearing is not fun. However, it seems that we've made up our numbers in record time! And without much sweat, either.  Smiley So I'll be heading back to Lambsville toot sweet, see?

Bah!
Mind you, I've done my duty at the coalface and now the Programme Leader is back so theoretically I should just be able to run away and join the circus!

trj should recognise all the people in it. And Reiner will no doubt be amused at how much opi has, er, 'filled out' ...

PS  If I tell you that the best bit of the ceremony was the free bottle of water, that gives you some idea of what our university excels in.

Congrats opi! I cannot help immediately recognising Prof. Robert Pascall - we have been friends and colleagues since 1966! I should have asked you to give him my good wishes, but there would be little point since he would have no idea who "Baz" was!

Not sure about the poorly-dressed gentleman on the left, but the chap with the nice smile, second from the right, is the brilliant John Tyrrell, Janacek's voice on earth.

If any Francophone Members in the vicinity of Paris should be contemplating a trip to Montfort-l'Amaury to have a picnic, check out the Ravel house full of quite spectacular kitsch (with an exhaustive commentary from the wonderful and extremely knowledgeable curatrix), and wander slowly back to the station through the sundrenched fields eating blackberries and maybe stopping here or there for a snooze in the grass, perhaps it might be useful to know that on the basis of recent experience I can thoroughly recommend such a course of action.

Although I'm afraid we didn't leave you many blackberries. Sorry about that.

Had a great session with my horn player today. He liked what I had written and once he'd deciphered the notation (can I just say here that all of the orchestration manuals that I've read are not terribly helpful on french horns).
Half-stopping is a wonderful thing. This is going to be a nice piece.  Grin

Very happy for you and your horn player, hh. Smiley Best of luck with it. Is it tuneful? Can you hum it to us?

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Kind of isn't the point of the piece I'm afraid. I could sing parts of it, but because I'm not a french horn you don't really get the real effect...
It's quite intense (I think).
