Guess what decided to perch in my apple tree for 15 minutes yesterday?

A grey heron.

It was such a thrill. So huge (for a bird), like having a pterodactyl in the garden. When it flies it looks like a flying umbrella. A nearby house has a big fishpond, so I expect they weren't as pleased to see it as I was.

During the recent RSPB birdwatch weekend, a heron landed in my parents' garden.
Despite the fact that they used to be in the area a lot (we had a nearby pond as well - eventually the owners gave up because the herons were eating all of their stock), they hadn't seen one for years. It chose a weekend when it would be noticed to turn up!
One of the strangest stories that they've told me about herons was that about 15 years ago, my mum heard a knock at the door, looked out of the window to see who it was, only to see a heron on the front doorstep, gently tapping at the window pane...

I'm sure a fairy tale could be based on that heron story. It reminds me of the time I opened my front door and a frog was sitting there looking at me. If I had kissed it, it might have turned into a prince.

I think storks bring babies, but they do look a bit like herons.

Or it might have been a really cool talking frog!

I'd like a gooseberry bush. It's becoming quite difficult to find gooseberries in the shops, and I love them. To find room, though, I'd have to uproot my best white camellia. Food v. beauty - difficult moral (?) dilemma.

If you keep eating those things you're going to look like one soon!
