I don't like the idea of "Trick or Treat" at all. Yet another silly American thing that's caught on over here with the kids. I always said I wouldn't go along with it and I certainly would never allow my child to go out trick or treating. However, I always used to close my tall gates thinking that would put them off and then one year a few climbed over. My dog attacked them and if I hadn't been very close at hand it could have been awful.
Since then I've left the gates open and prepared cookies and sweets to give out. I never give money. You have to give them something of course because otherwise they do something horrible to the house or garden on the way out.
At home, I've always made it a game with the children and had a little "spooky party". I don't mind that. George's little boy enquirer's mind could have been put at rest by his parents if they had made a game of it all.

My wife is actually a White Witch, although she doesnt practise; she has that special gift, you know what I mean.
I have a friend in Preston who regards herself as a Witch. She does practise and an interesting point here BBM, she scorns the idea of "White" witch. She says to have balance there always has to be two sides. Black and white. She would never use "black magic" she says, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. So basically, a witch is a witch...both black and white. She says that "White" witch is just a survival term over the years to quell people's fears. Everything has to be balanced. Light and dark. Every person has both good and bad inside them. Nobody is all good - "white".

Hope we dont get too many door knocking tonight. We are prepared!
I'm not - I forgot all about it. I don't like the trick or treat thing anyway. I think I'll hide! I live in a slightly out-of-the-way road anyway, and quite often no-one turns up on Hallowe'en. (What's the situation regarding the apostrophe here? Has it died out?)

I've never been called on by the Trick or Treat brigade although I've heard them outside calling at other houses. Last year it dawned on me that there is a kind of 'code'. If houses display pumpkin lanterns etc., that' s a signal that they are Hallowe'n friendly and the kids can call. The woman over the road always has a lantern in the window and a string of pumpkin lights in the garden, so she's very popular! Guess that makes me the grumpy old witch

I shall wear my witches' hat till I go out - in fact I might wear it to my friends' home when I turn up for tea. That should give them a giggle. It's a good job there isn't a webcam facility on here because I'm wearing it at the moment whilst I'm preparing breakfast. I think I look very fetching! I feel that if we can't change anything we may as well enter into the spirit of the thing.

I'm a bit dubious about all this trick or treating. Children or older people knocking on stranger's doors, etc. With some, its an excuse just to behave badly. All thanks to the Americans all this.
I hope it wont be too bad tonight. I be off to band and my wife I hope wont be alone.
I had forgtten about that there is no such thing as a black or white but two sides of the coin, black and white. They had this on 'The One Show' on BBC1 yesterday evening. They had this woman on who said she was one. Then I said to MrsBBM about her, she agreed, as I knew that already. I was just wondering then all about this.
Perhaps thats what we ned to have then, a pumpkin outside. Pumpkin pie or soup, both very nice!

I think you're getting rather attached to that hat Milly Well the big night is getting nearer (morning all by the way!) Last night I was putting some finishing touches to the shirt I'll be wearing for a zombie party on Saturday. Last night I put a load more red paint on it and it hadn't quite dried this morning so I hung it up near the window over some newspaper. As I was on my way out of the door I paused for a moment, went back and drew the blinds. I'm really not keen on horror or zombie films so all this is rather fraying my nerves. But I did discover that bits of rice cracker soaked in red paint go very dark and nasty looking. So I stuck a few to the front of the shirt. Uck. Oh the conflict - my competitive streak is just managing to overrule my sqeamish bits.

It's all going well so far. I just answered the door to a visiting child who's spending the day with us because his mother is ill. The hat has gone down well! Hopefully we'll cheer him up a lot as the day goes on.

I'm very dubious about the trick or treating part of Hallowe'en. We did have some trouble here a couple of years ago with some unruly youths out on Hallowe'en, and in a suburb/village that has a very high population of elderly people, there are a lot of vulnerable older folk who are really quite nervous (last year our village co-op had a ban on selling eggs and flour to the under-18s but that doesn't seem to be the case this time).

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I don't like trick or treat either. When i still lived with my parents, we refused to answer the door and some little ******** put eggs through the letter box. It was most unpleasant. In Suffolk, it was ok as our neighbours children were really nice and well behaved so we didn't begrudge them a chocolate bar or two. Where I used to live, we had only a few people call around and they were only small (about 5 years old) so they were ok. We're out for a meal tonight and won't get back until late so hopefully we'll miss them all tonight. When I was much younger, we filled up flying saucer sweets with salt and resealed them and draped a hosepipe out of a window and waited for the trick or treaters to come around (they were roudy, abusive and much older). Sadly, they didn't come and bother us so it was a waste of effort.

Good idea that jonathan! I might suggest that to the mrs!
I dont usually watch Malcom in the Middle, but I did last night. The odler brother came and rigged this rather powerful caterpolt and they waged war with everyone who was there intended target!

Best laid plans...we're all off to the hospital for the 10.30 appointment and visiting child has to come as well. They're both armed with Nintendo DS's to stave off the boredom. Last time we went, the clinic was running an hour late so if he hasn't been seen by 11.15 I shall have to leave him there because I've booked both kids in for lunch and the afternoon to play at Holiday Club. They have to be there for 11.45. Then I'll go back up to Blackpool to collect him. Never mind. Still happy because I'll have a free afternoon to do some shopping and attempt the mountain of jobs that have built up in the house this half-term!
