Just had an email form an pianist in America inviting me to vote at the site linked to below. No email address or other identification is required to vote. My correspondent is not happy with the way the vote is going so far.

Of course I don't like the way the poll currently sits, either, but surely there's a difference between 'is Sarah Palin qualified to be...' and 'do you want Sarah Palin to be...'. This poll is currently suggesting that 48% of people think she is unqualified. Not that she's less attractive than the other guy, but that she's actually unqualified.

Even as it stands, that must be a scary poll result for the Republican campaign...

What worries me is that anyone so blind to common sense and evidence as to be a creationist might react in strange ways to advice on other matters.  Of course, it depends whether she genuinely is, or whether she's just trying to win votes, but I'm not sure what's worse - blinkered or devious.

Just because she's a Washington outsider, people are talking about her as if she's a breath of fresh air.  But she has proved herself just as corrupt as any hardened politico.  As mayor of her small town, she tried to get her brother-in-law fired because he was fighting for custody of her sister's children.  When the person she instructed to fire him refused, she fired him instead.  She also tried to get a local librarian fired for refusing to remove books from the library.  And she is refusing to cooperate with the investigations into these abuses of power.

The phrase "Little Hitler" springs to mind.  Get beyond the rimless glasses and lipstick, people!

That was a cry to the American population at large, not the esteemed members of this board, by the way

The reason she has given for refusing to cooperate with the investigation is that it is "politically motivated."  Conveniently glossing over the fact that the investigation started before she was named as McCain's running mate.

Yes devious, and petty and vindictive.  Even if she held opinions I agreed with I'd be appalled at her behaviour (say for example she was trying to ban books on creationism from her local library - that wouldn't make me any happier).

I'm really worried.

Not to mention charging rape victims for the kits required to gather evidence in their cases.

She is appalling there is no doubt, but in that respect she's no different from any other politician IMHO.  They all are.  That's why the world is in such a mess.

This is the problem isn't it?  Anyone with an ego big enough to assume that they deserve and can handle that sort of position of responsibility is almost by definition completely unsuitable.

I'm sure there have been exceptions but it's always been a conundrum that bothers me.

To quote John Adams, the Vice Presidency is 'the most meaningless office that the mind of man ever contrived'.

The only thing that makes Palin scary is the age of John McCain and the whispering campaigns about his health.  But even in the event of McCain expiring in office, it's probable that Palin will rule in name only and that all the big decisions will be made by shadowy advisers (an equally scary thought, admittedly, but no less scary than the situation that has prevailed under GWB).

Palin is on the ticket to reassure the religious right, whom McCain has done so much to antagonise.

What worries me is the fact that a belief in creationism - or any other of her bizarre and backward opinions - would win votes! So much ignorance and bigotry.......

I don't even think she's good-looking, though most people seem to. She has a square aggressive jaw like a cartoon hero......oh, wait, perhaps that's the appeal Shocked

Ms Palin combines ruthlessness, deviousness and stupidity in equal measures, whilst not diminishing the effectiveness of any of the three.

However, before we burn her effigy in wax,  we ought to remember that the Clinton administration launched unprovoked overseas air-strikes on countries in the Middle East and Europe.

There is frankly little that distinguishes the Democrats from the Republicans - except the cheesiness of the grin.  Both have policies that are utterly despicable.  Anyone who believes Obama would be different from Bush is kidding themselves.

I agree with your final paragraph, Reiner.  I think what a lot of people want is a chief executive that they can feel better about living under: Obama, on the stump, comes across as an intelligent and articulate man, a description that could never have been made about Bush's own media image.  But people will feel less bothered about the awfulness of US foreign policy if its directed by an affable-looking, reasonable-seeming 'good guy' than a cussing 'good ole boy'.

But credit where credit is due. It must count as some sort of achievement to fail an entrance exam that Spiro Agnew managed to pass.
