Britten (who was a pianist some of the time) liked playing tennis, swimming and birdwatching. I didn't know about Rachmaninoff and gardening.

I think Rachmaninoff had a villa in Switzerland and he planted some trees or something. So I conclude that he liked gardening.

I know he wasn't a pianist, but Cage and mushrooms? This could be another thread, of course...

I've always fancied doing that... I could be the main supplier for a certain long kilometre of curry emporiums!  Wink

Well, he may not have been know for his pianism, but I have a CD of him playing his "Cheap Immitation" on piano. It's on the Cramps label. Wink

[Cramps, especially relating to the digestive system, are a common problem associated with eating the 'wrong' mushrooms.]

I don't know what this has to do with grumpy old rants, but someone once told me Dvorak was an avid trainspotter - anyone know if this is true?

I type this as I wait for the interminable cycle on the washing machine downstairs to end so i can finally doze off before my earlyalarm*. Some of Dvorak's tacets are midway between that and waiting for a train I think.

It is indeed true. marbleflugel. We had quite a discussion on the topic a year or so ago on one of the message boards BBCi used to offer for contributions about Radio 3.

. . . a common problem associated with eating the 'wrong' mushrooms.

We are unsurprised . . . he was after all a pretty peculiar creature:

It's spectacularly cluttered for a Zen Buddhist, isn't it? Not what I would have expected at all. Or maybe he used it as a spiritual exercise to see it as uncluttered.

Does that mean that though it's spelt Dvorăk, it should be pronounced An-or-ak?
