The only saving grace is that I often have the ipod in the same pocket, but not today thankfully.  If that had gone as well ...

I'm obviously not careful enough.

Ah: nasty :/  You loose much information?

(thanks for the various replies)

Now safely back in leafy Sussex ...

Many thanks for all the kind thoughts.

Looking on the bright side, the bugler that took it won't be able to use it (I work for an organisation that is paranoid about IT security and it is password protected and will have been wiped by now), I didn't lose any data because it's all backed up, and, most important of all, I wasn't attacked or mugged.  Just mightily inconvenienced (and kicking myself because deep down I know I probably should have been more careful), but it could have been so much worse.

Inky - sorry to hear about your incident and hope you're feeling better

Sorry to hear that PW. An uncle of mine was actually mugged on the metro in Paris. Tookmeverything. Although this was a few years back and he has now passed on, its still not a good thing to happen to anyone. Me and Mrs BBM are going to Spain on Saturday, my mother was saying to me, a couple of days ago, that on average, t Spanish airports, 7 out of 10 women's handbags, etc, were picked pocketed. Apparantly, Spain is in a recession at the moment, so this sort of activity is on the increase. Yikes!

Most Police forces will now supply (free) purse lanyards.  I would recommend Mrs. BBM got one.  Milly was pickpocketed (I think in Spain) last year in a Cathedral!

I was! In Barcelona!  Three hours in customs waiting for the Catalonian police to turn up  - three of them sauntered up eventually with all the time in the world and then they couldn't speak English!  Had the surreal experience of a Polish woman interpreting between the two of us - not very well.  There were lots of forms to fill in (in triplicate of course) because I needed a police reference so that I could claim off the insurance.  All the questions were actually in Spanish so at last in desperation I just took the forms and answered them without help.  I don't speak Spanish fluently but knew just enough fortunately.  The ship was sailing at 6 p.m., and they didn't turn up till 5.40!  I'd let the child go back on the ship at the outset with a friend so he was on board waiting all that time.

When I'd finished I ran back to the dock and they were just taking up the gang planks.  I had to race up as fast as I could to the ship and nearly wasn't in time to get back on.  Good job I'm fit!  My boarding pass had been stolen as well as my purse.  Fortunately they'd taken my picture so I was identifiable.

Some tips BBM.  Don't take your passport around with you.  If that gets stolen you're stuffed!  Fortunately mine wasn't taken.  Keep your money in a tight jeans pocket at the front, not the back and only take enough out for the day.  Don't carry any wallet.  Don't bother with bum-bags or things attached to belts because they just slice through those with stanley knives.

Why on earth should they?!

No reason at all except that they'd been told there was an English woman waiting - so you'd think they'd have organised an interpreter instead of P & O having to rush round and find one at the last minute!
They don't speak Spanish either.  Completely different language.  Fortunately there happened to be a Polish employee that knew enough to help.  However, as the forms themselves were in Spanish, I was able to manage in the end.

Just to clarify, I'm not one of those people who think that everyone should speak English by any means and I can sort myself out in French, German, Spanish and Hindi, although by no means fluent in any of them.

For something that has a legal requirement, in a place that encourages tourism, there should be interpreters employed in case of emergency.

And while we're on this subject - they had no need to send three policemen either.  One would have been fine.  It was farcical.  One got the forms out, passed them to another policeman, who passed them to the other, who passed them to me.  The same thing happened in reverse when I'd completed them. They do everything very slowly in Spain.  They drifted in as if there was all the time in the world, when they knew I'd been waiting for three hours and that the ship would be sailing very soon.

The 3 policmen I believe are highly trained to form a human pyramid in attacking or defensive mode. Also handy for those high -speed three-legged races round el  M25, and as a facilitative module to complete forms in triplicate antiphonally. is it any wonder that Brian Paddick has lobbed yellow paint all over my office shopfront-conceptual art innit.

..,Awful experience Milly, quite puts my hellish commutes due to bits Liverpool
St stn falling down (if only the human pyramid had got there in time) into perspective.
Benefits system just kicked a client of mine when he's down. General misgivings about moving on when all week I've been haring round them finding new crises or tipping point opportunities emerging. Still , my replacement is motivated and skilled so time to let go and take a break-I just hope I don't have Milly's experience in trying to do so.

Thank you for the tips, Milly, they've been taken on board. Hopefully, be stress free. With a bit of luck, wont need too much cash, as its one of those all-inclusive jobs. We experiencing this for the first time.

And another obvious one, bbm: please don't be tempted to overdo the sun: just take it very gently for the first few days at least....

My bedside cd/radio is playing up, refusing to play selected cds and last night refused to tune into R3.  So I selected Classic FM.  Presenter reading our readers email requests "I am a music student, can you play some Schubert, or anything except Messiaen as he is too difficult."  Reply from presenter "Yes, he certainly is difficult isn't he so we won't play anything from him tonight or tomorrow."  I'm still not sure if that was tongue in cheek or sincerely said.  Huh
