Ahem what?
(Which reminds me, incidentally ... If any of you was planning to try and explain 'Knock knock' jokes to an other half who isn't English: don't bother!)

I find the Scottish are ok with them. And the Irish. And the Welsh (though it's been a while).

Oops. There I go again (mamma mia).
I think I meant sort of 'English-speaking', or something like that.
Knock knock.

Departmental away day tomorrow... Not really sure what it's all going to be about either. This isn't really a rant, more of a quiet whine.

Tin, is that because many rely on facile word-play, or? I have to say that, as a hiberno-english speaker with some basic fluency in English proper, I still find them often quite trying. Though I do recall having a book of them as a child that I thought quite highly of.

I had tried to explain the basic principle to Mr Tinners2 a few weeks ago, but couldn't come up with an example even that I found funny. Then we went to see a play which included this rather classic specimen, but he still didn't laugh:
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Is it a big horse?
"Is it a big horse" who?
[bursting into song] Is it-a be-cause I am a Londoner? ...

You're all missing the classic:
KK WT? Doctor Doctor Who? YOU JUST SAID IT!
(accompanied by 5-year-olds squealing with glee. I love this joke.)
