MJ, I hope it's not like the bite I received about 5 years ago - it comes back every year!

Watch out for those red ants MJ, especially if they're this size! I rarely get bitten by insects but I've had several bites this year for some reason - perhaps it's just bad luck? I'm grumpy cos the rain doesn't seem to have cooled things down at all, it still very hot and humid.

Watch out for those red ants MJ, especially if they're this size! Yup, they're about that size, the vicious beasts. The annoying thing is, they seem to bite for NO REASON AT ALL - though no doubt they'd accuse us of invading their territory and that's a good enough reason for them. I once lived somewhere where the garden was overrun with red ants, in fact I never saw a single black one, just red ones all over the place. But I found that if I wanted to sit on the lawn I could do so if I sat on a white bed sheet. For some unknown reason, that protected me as the red ants would become confused once on the sheet, stagger round and round in circles and eventually drop dead. Very peculiar.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Why is it, that despite the fact that my mother taught me from a young age that life isn't fair (and I thought I had taken that on board), the fact that it isn't, always catches me unawares?

It only seems that life is unfair. We all (including mosquitos and snakes) were created by nature. I am trying to accept things and people, have trust in life and its lessons.
It is hard to come to terms with the other side of life (negative part), but negative thigs are the other side of the same coin. You have to believe that the behind all of life is kindness and love. Everything comes from the same source.
We all go through the same feelings, hh. If we don't struggle we don't learn.

I got back from the Prom rather later than I had intended tonight, having gone for a drink on impulse. When I got home, there was a welcoming committee, who when asked admitted that they had been waiting up for me. Größes HMFFF.

hmfff is merely an attempt at rendering an expression of annoyance into type. and does it hurt ? From a purely external point of view; the ultimate goal of parenting is, as far as possible, to create independent (and -ideally - mature) beings who are able to stand alone against the wind. Therefore the ability to 'let go' is just as important a part of the process as raising the child. It may well be a challenge, but it is the long challenge that all parents set themselves.
A further grump, my recording of the Bayreuth Walküre yesterday off Bayern 4 Klassik conked out twenty minutes after I left the house.

Erm, Eru, I too was bemused by hmfff. In my day, the equivalent of the gap year was, in fact, two years National Service in Her Majesty's armed services. The term fff indicated a 'free from infection' spot check by the Unit Medical Officer!

Ha! Don't start me off, Pim! I could relate several bizarre anecdotes about barrack room life. I think it was the News (Screws!) of the World which used to advertise as 'All human life is there'. Believe me, the 'ffi' had its own subtext with 18 year olds! Fings ain't what they used to be. A few months ago, I unearthed a paperback, "All Bull: The National Servicemen" (1973), edited by B S Johnson. Contributions from Jeff Nuttall, Edward Lucie-Smith, Alan Burns, Michael Holroyd, Michael Bakewell, Alan Sillitoe, John Arden and David Hockney et al. "It's a mad world my masters"; so appropriate
