When I was sorting through my mother's things last year I came across a copy of Town and Around recipes by Zena Skinner (published BBC 1965). Anyone remember her?

Unfortunately I do. I can picture her now though I can't remember anything about her TV appearances. I expect my Mum used to watch her, I certainly wasn't interested in cookery then, even her sort.

No wonder you remember her, Andy - I googled Zena Skinner and this is the image I found:

Elizabeth David certainly can give detailed instructions, it is just she is so much more memorable for her evocations (such as her 40 page review of French provinicial traditions).

Her English Bread and Yeast Cookery combines painstakingly accurate descriptions of recipes with a wealth of social history, mythology and lore to provide a very moving work from a woman who was not noted for her gentleness.  As she investigates one of the chief symbols of the principal Christian ritual, she consults and quotes the Bible given her as a confirmation present, and probably never consulted since.

Nice and simple tonight.
Risotto with a quick hunt around the fridge for things to put into it.
Olives, feta, pine nuts and capers.
That should do it.

Pizzas all round chez Green, on account of nephew and niece still being in situ. Last night of that kind of carry on. Tomorrow, it's a Thai meal out at a very fine place I know, with friends. Phew.  Tongue

It was also lovely. Nice pile of cabbage alongside.
Really glad that I didn't do what I was tempted to do - pop into the Co-op and buy pizza or fish - this was much better!
Steak tomorrow night, and I don't even have to cook it!
I do intend to cook my own pizza this weekend - haven't done that since moving up here and I really enjoy doing it.

Thai food - love it, love it. YUM!!  Pizza's fine too BUT the most unholy alliance I have ever seen was on a pizza leaflet that dropped through my letter box. You may need to sit down for this - Thai Green Curry Pizza Honest!   Shocked Shocked

Didn't have anything planned tonight, but had to use up sweet potatoes and other vegs so did a gratin topped with yogurt and cheese.  Worked OK and included cannelli beans, garlic, three crushed juniper berries and a spring of rosemary.

Plenty left to take into work tomorrow for lunch

I've never eaten Thai out before. Always wanted to but never actually got around to it...

hh, in my experience, once you have eaten Thai - you are hooked.  I never had Thai until I had it in Sydney - the flavours are so subtle - try looking for Ken Hom recipes

Oh I quite agree. I've eaten it "in" before (friends have cooked it for me, I have cooked it and I have eaten ready meals) but I was just saying that I've never gone out to eat it before!
