Ever since Ants mentioned spag bol at the weekend I have been taunted by my 'taste memory'. I have finally caved in and the bolognese sauce is now puttering away quietly on the stove. I had been planning on a rather more animal-friendly avocado, mozzarella and tomato salad with a Basil dressing. Ah well, there's always tomorrow. Anyway, the avocado isn't quite ripe yet .... Excuse? Moi?

Alas, I can't claim credit for that use of 'puttering` It's a Nigel Slaterism. He's a big fan of 'puttering' food. Most food is improved by a good putter

Or even <Furtively grabs cloak> Very good Mort - put that cloak back. Did they used to be called Golf biscuits?

(Does anyone here play golf?)
(does anyone at all play golf? I don't know anyone who does. Maybe it's all some weird kind of hoax.)

One composer by the name of Downie does.

My ex used to. But there were other reasons why I finished with him too.

I don't play golf either, though I'm in a decided minority here. There can be very few towns this small which can boast three stations on the same line, and the fact that the middle one is called 'Golf Street' underlines the major importance that the game has locally, a fact further reinforced by the existence of two flourishing emporia dedicated to the game in a high street which boasts scarcely more than a score of shops in toto.
At weekends and on summer evenings quite small kids can be seen carrying their golf bags to the courses and back again, and there are more than a few older folk who've been playing since before I was born. I'm afraid I'm one of those who subscribe to the dictum "....a good walk spoiled", (though I'd never dare repeat it round here).

One of my brothers has always been an avid golfer (to the extent of going on holidays which were just a succession of different courses - yawn!) Were Clubs called Golfs? I don't remember that.
However, to get this back to food it is so hot and humid here so when I get home I'm going to make a new potato salad, heavy on the spring onions, a tomato salad, and some mixed salad leaves with shredded raw beetroot served with a tranche of good quality ham.

FOUR! Ahem. Now, Anty, that sounds exactly the meal I'd like to have tonight. But since I can't be asked either to make one for myself or to drive over to share yours (no, sorry, I really can't), it's going to be another Waitrose pizza and salad. Just a bit even though they are pretty damn fine.

I'm just heating up some fishcakes. I was going to have some salad with them but I don't seem to have any lemons or vinegar for the dressing, or yogurt for the cucumber, so I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do yet. I've got stuff like mushrooms, pak choi and peppers but I'm not sure if I can be bothered. It's not very hot here so it's not exactly salad weather... Perhaps some grilled pak choi and peppers with garlic thrown in. That sounds pretty good. Let's go with that.
