It certainly is, Mary. The grey one is an interloper. Still at least that`s two nuts nuts we`ve managed to forage for George, and maybe if David has a dig around in his garden .....?  Grin

Here's a proper squirrel:
Unfortunately, it's probably stuffed and on display.
I've never seen a red squirrel.

I was rather astonished to find, when I was living in Berlin, that the grey/red proportion in the UK is completely reversed there.

The only nuts the squirrels in my garden eat are the ones in the bird feeders ...  Angry

OK, given which room we're in, has anyone eaten a grey squirrel? I keep on meaning to ask at my local game stall but chicken out at the last minute. I believe that Roger Scruton is rather an evangelist for the squirrel diet.

Well, I don't think this one is!

I haven't seen a wild red squirrel outside a reserve (there's one near me) since ..er...1976, in Suffolk. They are gorgeous, quite a lot smaller than the grey ones.

The squirrel culinary experience is described at:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article522470.ece

But I can't say I'd fancy it much.

My problem is that although I have long recognised the greys as vermin, Mrs PW is a Kiwi (by which I mean New Zealander rather than a flightless bird) and, having grown up in a squirrel-free country, regards them as terribly cute.  Not even the sight of what a solitary squirrel did to a patch of hyacinth bulbs in the few seconds before I managed to chase it off has managed to cure her of this delusion.

Mr Elvis Presley was brought up on Squirrel Pie I believe so it's obviously good for the hips.

Myself, I prefer Mole, roasted in their velvet jackets.

Mole winced at the sight of his dear departed cousins, then drew himself up to his full height and gave George a steely stare. Somewhere in the distance a dog barked.

King Kennytone has a recipe for broiled squirrel on his blog which I hope he won't mind me posting here.

TRADITIONS OF THE BRITISH ISLES #1: SQUIRREL HUNT ART FACTS>>
YES MAN KING KENNYTONE *(&^%] :z

now read on..

#1: BROILED SQUIRREL.--For cooking, squirrel is cleaned in practically the same way as rabbit. Squirrel may be made ready to eat by stewing, but as it is so small a creature, broiling is the usual method of preparation. To broil a squirrel, first remove the skin and clean it.Then break the bones along the spine, so that the squirrel can be spread out flat. When thus made ready, place it on a well-greased hot broiler and sear it quickly on one side; then turn it and sear the other side. Next, sprinkle it with salt and pepper, place strips of bacon across the back, and allow it to broil slowly until it is well browned. Squirrel may be served in the same way as rabbit.

#2: SAUCE FOR BROILED SQUIRREL

2 Tb. butter2 Tb. flour

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

4 Tb. currant jelly

2 tsp. lemon juice

1/4 c. port wine

6 finely chopped Maraschino cherries

Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the flour, salt, ground cinnamon, currant jelly, lemon juice, and the port wine, which should be heatedwith 1 cupful of water. Cook until the flour has thickened, remove fromthe fire, and add the cherries.

I've had red squirrels feed out of my hand before - probably in the same reserve that Mary refers to (Formby).

Please, no more squirrel recipes.  Cry  Cry  Cry

Those red squirrels at Formby are gorgeous aren't they. We've only been there once, must go again soon.
