Percy Grainger?
...with Richard Strauss, whistling his Ramble on themes from 'Der Rosenkavalier' ? Sadly not.

Your Debussy/ Mahler theory gives you the right country of location.

Yes it is, Tony! Any idea where or when? (I don't know the answers to these ones, but have a rough idea)

I'm sure I've seen the picture before. Weren't they trying to collect folk songs? Round about 1910. I thought it was in the south of England somewhere.

The only place I can track down the photo online is here: http://www.rvwsociety.com/timelinenewpart1.htmlThe photo is also in a CD I have of Holst's 'Cotswold Symphony', which is captioned 'Holst and Vaghan [sic] Williams on a walking holiday'.

I'm sure I've seen the picture before. Weren't they trying to collect folk songs? It sounds very plausible although they don't seem to have their equipment with them.

Luck rather than judgement, I assure you. It had to be the Nobel prize and the Walton was never going to be William.
Sorry for my bad spelling. I had to learn English at a place were the Famous Five decided to speak German when they would appear on television: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhcjOMdP3as&mode=related&search=

Yes, I know him! Wonderful man. A sort of Douglas Bader of the Lied (I wonder what would have become of Bader if he had been born without his legs). Quasthoff's autobiography has been translated into Dutch recently and believe me, that translation is very, very bad:

I did not know about Quasthoff'. I can google now of course. A friend send me his name. She is going to be in London at the end of May and wanted to hear him, but tickets are sold out. Angela Hewitt concert on 30 of May is also sold out.
