John Philip Sousa (1854-1932). Or it could be black composer, for example Scott Joplan. Am I close?

The composer may not have written any published music while living in that house, well, maybe one piece was started there and finished in Europe, and was named after the state......

Well done roslyn. The Delius house it situated in Florida, the land is now part of Jacksonville Uni campus. Delius was managing a family orange grove 1884-1886 before embarking properly on a musical career back in Europe. He finished the Florida Suite (or Tropical Scenes for Orchestra) in 1888. I gave out all the clues early on because I'm away for a couple of days, maybe back on-line Thursday evening, if the kids don't trash the place John W

Oh, Sir John Cockroft MP, the one without the second 'c' . If I had known that I would of course have got the answer several days ago . This makes autoharp's achievement even more impressive!

Luck rather than judgement, I assure you. It had to be the Nobel prize and the Walton was never going to be William.
