I cought this thread too late. I never been to Klin unfortunately. I hope I can go there at least once in my life time.
Klin is very close to Moscow (about 100 km). German's took it in WWII, but did not get Moscow.
I really like to see it. May be we can organize a trip for all of us to go there.
Thank you for this picture, John.

That could be a trip of a life time with concerts, recitals, master classes etc etc etc. (I have a good imagination me think).

Yes, it was John Cockroft. I found out about the MP on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cockcroft

Time Inc. announced a few weeks ago that it would fold Life magazine as of April 20, 2007. When I read about this I remembered that Time issued a series of books in the early 1960s about different countries. I don't own the complete series, I only have three volumes: Britain, the United States and Israel. All the pictures in these books did appear earlier in Life.

The books were translated into Dutch by the staff of the Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool (at that time the best paper in the Netherlands, you don't want to know what it looks like nowadays).

I found the picture of John Cockroft in the Britain book. When I saw that he was holding an old (at that time new) DECCA record I decided to put it up for our little quiz.

There's also a chapter in this book about the arts. Benjamin Britten is featured on the first page:

The book was written by the American journalist John Osborne, the London correspondent of Time. It's really a book from the time when ordinary people didn't travel a lot to foreign countries.

Was MP John Cockroft famous for anything? Did he like music? Why is he in Life magazine?
I suppose Life magazine is not popular any more. John Cockroft was obviously musical if he is holding Stravinsky record. (unless it is done for publicity).

I don't know if MP John Cockroft ever made it to the pages of Life magazine, trained-pianist.

I think the picture of John Cockroft the physicist was made around the time he received the Nobel Prize.

I am not very attentive, pim_derks. I am sorry. I need to read much slower. May be my English is not too good and some subtle things escape me.
I understand now that it is John Cochroft the physicist.
Am I correct now? I read something in Dutch (Naturalist or something).
The picture of Menuchin and Britten is very interesting. Thanks for your post.

Oh, Sir John Cockroft MP, the one without the second 'c' Cheesy. If I had known that I would of course have got the answer several days ago Wink.

I see now, it is Cockeroft. I can not even spell his name correctly. I am so frustrated with myself.

Not Ives.

It's not a birthplace.
