I think I saw this sculpture recently. Possibly it was during Handel as a composer of the week on Radio 3. May be I am dreaming, but this sculpture looks very familiar.

t-p,
There are several statues of Handel. This one is a bit special in that he's not wearing a massive wig, he's very casually dressed (one of his feet is out of his shoe/slipper) and most unusual it was made and erected when he was still alive! THAT is unusual for a statue to an artist.

I don't know when it was either, John, but I have a vague and distant memory of there being a bit of a tussle (of the sort that refined museum directors have i.e. vicious, unprincipled and with no hostages taken ) between the National Portait Gallery and the V & A over who should have it. The V&A won but Roy Strong got sweet revenge by taking over there in due course.

Thanks George and tonybob,
I liked the comment in the V&A page that the statue had more life in its original garden setting, what with daylight and, likely, shadows of trees etc.

It was considered to be an excellent likeness of Handel. (There is a memorial to him in Westminster Abbey, which is what I was thinking of.)
I've got a book called London's Finest Statues and unfortunately this one doesn't appear. There are just two of composers, in fact: one of the boy Mozart in Ebury Street which was only put up in 1994, and the one of Sullivan on the Victoria Embankment Gardens, although it is the half-dressed, grieving woman who receives the attention, for some reason.

It's not a baby Carreras is it? (Largely on the basis that it's not a baby Pavarotti or Domingo )
