It'll not be the first time that the voice of Ben has been mute, Mary: I seem to remember that in my childhood there was a stretch where Great Tom from Oxford stood in as radio understudy for quite a while, and there has been fairly major work several times since.

As long as the ravens don`t flee The Tower as well, we should be able to rest easy, Mary ! Grin

Since Tom strikes local time (ie five minutes later than GMT or BST - very Oxford) that is not a very good idea.  I heard on the radio that Big Ben is out of action for some weeks now, but nothing about Tom as a substitute.

I have been beside the bell when it struck noon, and I couldn't wait for it to finish chiming.  Shocked Shocked

I heard on the radio on Friday that apparently Big Ben was "offline" for several months some years ago.  It's probably for maintenance.  Wasn't it also muted during the Blitz to avoid it being used as a marker for German bombers?

There's this from Thursday:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6938143.stm
but you can hear the 12 o'clock bells here in a somewhat noisy street recording:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2006/03/15/bigben_audio_feature.shtml

Haven't been tuned to R4 lately so don't know if there's now a temporary substitute for Big Ben.

            Boing!

I'm very worried about Martle's 'postage stamp' by the way. I do hope he didn't forget to water it this morning before setting off for the Albert Hall. It's not looking at all green round the gills.

Five minutes later than GMT might be local time but not five minutes after BST, surely?  Huh

Sorry, a bit of nitpicking there!

An even more nit infested nitpicker writes:

These days Great Tom only strikes 'Oxford time' at 9.05 each evening when it strikes 101 rather than 9 which I suppose would make it even more unsuitable for the start of a two minute R4 news bulletin at 9.00. It then puts itself to bed until the following morning at 8.00 when it strikes at the 'right' time through the day until it gets to 9.00/9.05 in the evening again.

Oh! Haven't been on this tread in a bit.  But allow me some F O'B Wink

Unconnected query, not worthy of its own thread so I'm putting it here:

How easy is it to get a taxi from Sadler's Wells after performances? Are there plenty, or does one have to fight?
