I have a dilemma.  There are two concerts I really want to go to...

Number one: Double bill of Britten church parables - The Burning Fiery Furnace and The Prodigal Son, by Imperial Productions at Holy Trinity, Prince Consort Road: http://www.imperialopera.org.uk/v2/shows/britten-parables

Number two: The Early Opera Company's performance of Semele, with a fab cast: http://www.cadoganhall.com/showpage.php?pid=492

...but the problem is, the week in question currently looks like this:

Wednesday, Siegfried (ROH).  Friday, Götterdämmerung (ROH).  Saturday, La straniera (Opera Rara/LPO)

...and if I book for either of the other two things it will look like this:

Tuesday, Britten Double Bill. Wednesday, Siegfried.  Thursday, Semele.  Friday, Götterdämmerung.  Saturday, La straniera.

I really don't want to be out five nights in a row, and I had hoped to have nothing else going on during the breaks in the Ring Cycle as I am quite keen to see it without being musically interrupted.  And I've got about tuppence ha'penny left in the music budget for this year, besides the modest sum earmarked for ROH Booking Period 3.  But I REALLY want to go to the other concerts, and I've already had to turn down one opera that's on my "must see someday but have never had the opportunity" list that week (http://www.cadoganhall.com/showpage.php?pid=491) due to the clash with Götterdämmerung.

Such are the tribulations of living in London - well, I have only myself to blame, I DID move here for the music - but what do I do?

This is very difficult dilemma, Ruth.
Some times there is too much choice. One can not see everything and be everywhere. Was it Balzac who said that we can not have a cake and eat it too. I often think about this myself.
In  your case it is so interesting to make a choice and be in good humour about it. (I think it is enlightened response).

Thank you t-p Smiley

I think I will probably end up deciding to do everything.  I will justify it by saying that I suppose I should be grateful that I am not facing the prospect of attending 13 events in 19 days, plus the funeral of a close family member, in 4 different locations around the UK, while moving house.

That was last year...

I envy you, Ruth, with a dilemma like that!

It's a rare opportunity to see those two Britten pieces. They're hardly ever performed, and I feel they are far from his best work. I've never actually seen either of them (I have the recordings), but I imagine they need good production and very good performances. I do hope you go, so that you can report here on them. Britten tends to work much better on the stage than on recordings.

Elizabeth Watts in Semele - now that would be unmissable.

Unmissable indeed, and I have already missed it once, as she sang it for British Youth Opera in 2004(?) when I missed both of BYO's shows due to clashes with unmissable Proms (their other opera that year was The Cunning Little Vixen with Lucy Crowe, and my decision to miss it is still causing me to kick myself).

As for the Britten, no, I haven't seen them either.

I think my mind is made up (now why couldn't I have thought of this last week, when I was booking something else at Cadogan Hall and could have saved myself a second booking fee Roll Eyes)

While I'm naturally very sorry to hear of your loss, I have to ask if it's something religious?

Grin Perhaps you should drop in on the Pedantry thread for some therapy, Kitty?

Here's what happened last year:

Quite possibly; I'm formulating right this moment a mass order (for delivery) of tinned foods to keep my shopping-bags lighter for the winter; so far on my list I have

40x tins of tomatoes
20x tins of beans (possibly more)
60x rolls of toilet paper (oh what a luxury not to have to think of *that*!)
3x tubes of toothpaste
5x bags of white flour

Not sure what else.  Any suggestions?

Rice?
Pasta?
Sugar?
Coffee/Drinking Chocolate?
Cooking oil?
Shampoo?
Wine/beer/spirits?
Dried pulses if you use them
Tinned pulses (ditto) - i.e. kidney beans for chilli
