My Waffle Question for the evening:

Are Katia Ricciarelli and Benoît Mandelbrot related?

Very many felicitations of the season to GG and everyone else too.

My dog has impeccible timing.  Not only does he unfailingly ask to go out to the garden whenever I sit down for a meal, but he has just, with 2 shopping  hours left, asked me to get a present for his cat friend, Odin.

I am not of a feline persuasion, and haven't a clue where to start.

So, Catpeople, what do you recommend?

Thanks

Tommo
Our cats' best toy at the moment is an old wiper blade which they found lying on the kitchen floor. They've stalked it, pounced on it, fought it, dragged it around and chewed it. Another fairly unlikely favourite toy is a girl's hair bobble - ie a small ponytail band. If no human's available to throw it for her, Zoe will toss it up into the air herself and catch it.

Sadly I didn't manage to get a Cuddly Catnip Brunhilde for Odin, so he had to do with a rattly ping pong ball and a Catnip Mouse.  But thanks for all the help.

Any other teachers here use INCERTS?
I'm updating some - doing them in dribs and drabs over the holiday as it's very time-consuming. Easy to get bored though and so tempting to pop into r3ok at the click of a mouse...I can see how people working in offices must be irresistibly tempted by the tantalisingly close proximity of message boards when they should be working on pcs.

My general musing of the day is as follows:

Why has my bank decided to increase my overdraft limit threefold, when it is almost ten years since the last time I was overdrawn on my current account?

I even have a credit card with the same bank, with a credit limit of £9000, on which I owe nothing.  So why are they continuing to increase my access to credit when I don't use what I already had?

I shall be in touch with them soon to cancel the unused credit card and lower my overdraft limit to a "just in case" modest three-figure sum again...

I'm the same Ruth.  They put them up automatically every year.  I have a ridiculously high overdraft and credit card limit which I never use.  All the same I'd advise against cancelling or lowering.  I keep them in place ...just in case.  You never know what life will throw at you and it's really nice to know that you've something substantial to fall back on should a really dire emergency occur.  The credit card limit is particularly useful if you travel a lot.

Banks seem to delight in heaping money/credit on people who don't need it.  Try asking for an increase on your overdraft when you actually need it.

I'd say it's best to keep the higher overdraft and the credit card.  Even if you never use it, it'll look good on your credit reports should you need to apply for a new mortgage, buy a car, take out a personal loan, whatever.  And as Milly says, you never know when an emergency might arise.

The disadvantage of keeping a high value of available "empty" credit is that if you want to apply for new credit elsewhere - for example to get better cashback or an interest-free deal on a "general spending and pay it off each month" card - you're more likely to be turned down if there's a lot of available credit already sitting on your record.

I do want a new credit card.  I currently have an Amex card which gives me 1% back on purchases, and a Sainsbury's Bank Visa card which I originally got as it offered me 12 months interest-free on purchases (now long expired) but which is now not doing me any particular favours.  I want to replace this with another card that gives me a cashback or interest-free deal, for use when a retailer doesn't accept Amex.  And I'd better get my skates on, as the next couple of months will see me spending three-figure sums with people who don't accept Amex - Opera Holland Park and Glyndebourne, for example.

Off to do some research on Moneysavingexpert this evening, methinks.

I received an American Express card offer in the post today.  How do these people obtain our addresses?  I've never asked for one - ever.  Reading it now "Introducing the card that keeps on working for you after the others stop".  Stuck to the letter is a plastic card which says "this is not a real American Express card".  Perks are "Extended Warranty Benefit, Refund Protection Benefit, Purchase Protection Benefit, Membership Rewards Programme, Fraud Protection Guarantee, Travel Back-up, plus hundreds of offers for you to enjoy at home and abroad."

"The American Express Card's fee is only £60 a year so you get all these great benefits for the equivalent of £5 a month.  Also, as it's a charge card, you pay off your balance in full every month so you won't pay any interest.  Apply NOW for the Card that gives you more - simply fill in the enclosed application form and return it in the freepost envelope today."

That's gone in the bin.  All those trees..... junk mail......... Angry

When you register for elections you can elect to go on the list where people can't use your details for mailing.

Milly, companies swap or `sell on` customer lists between themselves. If you`re with one credit card company, all the others will dive in. I order from two gardening catalogues but regularly get engulfed with catalogues from other gardening companies Angry

I always tick the boxes telling them not to do that.  Perhaps they just don't take any notice?
