Legally they have to. You can get them on the Data protection act, which prohibits misuse or forwarding of data to third parties without your consent.

I received an American Express card offer in the post today. How do these people obtain our addresses? I've never asked for one - ever. I got one of those once, 3 or 4 years ago. I applied for one as invited, and they turned me down!
