On a similar note, an Australian friend of mine who lives in Paris likes to exclaim "fils de plage!"

Was I then the only one who thought the word to be pronounced "picture-skew"? My grandma used to say 'Oh, that's very picture-square'!

My parents, both French speakers, used to refer to thin magpies at Christmas (mince pies), and with our street-beard we would have coutarde (cf. moutarde). There were numerous other examples of silly French jokes.

One of the chaps in our office came to visit in Paris a little while back and at one poitn exclaimed "On y va qui mal y pense!". Oh how we laughed.
(Funny thing is, my better half didn't recognise the phrase he was alluding to. It seems to have disappeared from la francophonie...)

My mum used to say 'Are you talking to me , or the bobby on the townhall square?' ( When I talked too loudly!)

I like Baz's new avatar and motto. Is there any particular reason?

Because you're soft on him and want to marry him? But tough: I think he's taken.

Well yes! As Horace said, "Aequam memento rebus in arduis servare mentem".

Very good Mr Sudden - I wondered when someone might crack the motto! Baz

Except it's just 'where no one has gone before' isn't it? I'm afraid I stumbled on that little Horatian line. I think I translated most of it but my brain was obviously not level enough to assemble a meaning.

True. But let's face it - it would have been pretty difficult to create a split infinitive in Latin wouldn't it?! Baz

Shouldn't be that difficult to insert a audacter somewhere, though, surely?
