No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

I finally bought the clarinet in C this afternoon, a Leblanc Esprit. I'm going to play it in a concert in July - in Smetana's Vltava and the fourth movement of the Symphonie Fantastique. (I wish we were playing the whole of that, or at least the fifth movement as well. In that, the second clarinettist (me) gets to play the famous tune at the beginning on a C clarinet, before the first player plays it on an E flat.)

I wish I'd had it last year when we played Schubert's 9th, which calls for the C throughout. It could be said that Schubert and Beethoven (who uses it in his 1st and 9th symphonies) and other composers of that time only used it because it suited the key well and that a B flat sounds better, but I think Berlioz wanted a particular colour. When Mahler asks for the C, though, I really do think it should be used.

Tonight, it's the strings of the Orchestra of the Age of Englightenment playing Czech baroque music and I shall be taking the tickets on the door. (I hope I don't get any complaints that it's not the full orchestra. To be honest, I would have liked to see and hear the other instruments too.)

Yes indeed. I wonder if there are actually any 4x4 drivers round here. If so, shame on you.

Not a lot of change yet, Richard. Keep your fingers crossed for improvement otherwise it`s into hospital with me for IV anti-biotics. Gulp!

Note to self: Remember to check out local mosquito net emporium. Grin

Here you are, Mort. Print it out, pin it to your wall and throw kitchen utensils at it.  Wink
