I'm sure most people have seen this sign from time to time:

WARNING

HAZCHEM

For some reason best known to my subconscious, I always assumed (without having really thought too much about it) that 'hazchem' was Hebrew for 'warning'. It was only when someone asked me if I knew any words in Hebrew and I told them this word, and they asked how I knew it, that I realised mid-explanation how unlikely it actually was that English building firms would display that (and only that) notice in bilingual English-Hebrew form.

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

Was there really a notice once that said:

DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE

or is it just an urban myth?
I still remember the (college) school bus that had a sign at the front "no spitting"

No, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm only a halfwit. In fact I'm actually a catfish.

Sorry to strike a coarse note at this time of night but there's the sign in the pub:

ALL THE BEER ON THESE PREMISES HAS BEEN PASSED BY THE MANAGEMENT.
